I have a question for you L&D nurses. I am currently around 24 weeks pregnant. I have pretty severe pain underneath my right rib that radiates to my back. It is also sore to palpation. I also am having pain on my left side under my rib also. Any ideas as to what this is? Is it from the baby?

Congrats! Well I don't know what to tell you. Is there anything that makes it better or worse? Is the baby moving? Any HX of gallbladder? If it is really bothersome I would consult your doctor, like a phone diagnosis it is pretty hard to tell what it could be over the internet. Other things though. Any swelling? Any nausea? Headache, visual disturbances, Increased BP? Vomiting? I had what sounds like the same pain under my right rib almost my entire pregnancy -- the docs could find nothing, but counter pressure on the area helped somewhat, of course I pts thought it was kinda funny the way I walked around putting counter pressure on my ribs all the time )
I haven't had any swelling, headaches, visual disturbances, or increased blood pressure. Just the rib pain which is very painful and is also tender to touch.
Those are all very good things then. I would consult your physician and see if she/he has any suggestions. For now you could try a warm compress and tylenol (as long as you are not allergic to Tylenol) to relieve some of the pain. I hope the pain goes away soon. 'sorry I was not of more help.

Is it rib pain...or right upper quadrant pain? Have you had an injury? Cough, fever, etc?
RUQ pain makes me think gallbladder (is it worse after eating?), but also I think of the liver. HELLP syndrome can initially present as RUQ pain in my limited understanding of OB nursing. (Someone please educate me if I'm incorrect!)
Good luck to you & your "little peanut"!
I think it maybe more upper quadrant pain then rib pain because it is tender to palpation under my ribs

I had that, it was a pulled intercostal muscle. Hurt like heck, hurt to breathe, move, exhale...it was a real blast. Nothing much you can really do for it except time, rest, and of course tylenol and low heat. Have you called your OB?
