Week Before School

Specialties School

I was just interviewed yesterday for a School Nurse position and I think I'm going to be offered the job!! I have experience in psych, ER and neuro nursing. I wondered what advice you all could give me for the week before school to get really organized and ready for the kids. I'm super organized but nervous about the first few weeks, wanting to be organized and ready to go for the kids. Thanks!

Congrats! What grades?

Kindergarten-4th grade. :)

Congratulations! I come in for 2 days before the kids start. Some of that time is spent on staff education (Universal Precautions and Epi pen training), some is spent getting my office kid ready (often I have to box stuff up for the summer) and some is spent mentally preparing myself for the first few weeks (they always are the most exhausting I find). I have a list of all my students and the forms I need to receive back from them in an EXCEL doc I use each year. This helps me keep track of physicals I need, immunizations I'm waiting for, emergency contact info sheets and any medications/authorizations I am expecting. Expect it to be a but crazy and disorganized, especially your first year. Good luck!

Good luck! The NASN has a back to school checklist that may help you. It's free.

I am just as anxious for first of the year advise! I started Oct. 15 last year, right in the big middle of vision/hearing screens. I learned by doing because I got no orientation to anything. This was OK with me. I think I have the BEST job in the whole school, also have the best office :D I love this site and have learned so much since I found it! Good luck and congratulations on your new job!

Before school see who still needs immunizations and call those parents. See who has any special healthcare needs so you can notify/train those teachers and be waiting for any dr orders to come in the first day. Get your office organized and decorated however you want because it's now yours! :) Oh and familiarize yourself with the school layout and staff. Congrats!
