Weed and work.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A classmate of mine is a heavy cannabis user. To the point where he has not even applied for any positions yet because he is certain that his pre-screening drug test will come back positive. He says that he just has to stay clean long enough to pass the drug screening because "hospitals hardly ever drug tests to nurses."

How true is this? How often are nurses screened at YOUR facility? I was going to ask my preceptor, but I think me asking will look weird..

It sounds like your friend has more of a problem than just needing to pass a drug screen. If he is unable to put down the weed long enough to pass a drug screen then he is likely addicted. In Texas, that would pose a problem for you too. Being aware of the situation you would be required to report him to the Board of Nursing. Check with your BON for the laws in your state. It's not about not wanting to rat out your friend. It's about protecting the patients.

Rat him out for what? He's not doing anything with patients. He's not even applying.

Can he stay sober at work? I was drug screened at hire & not again for 20 yrs. If he can stay sober at work, he can go to a headshop & buy "cleaners" that will help him pass a urine drug screen. I know people that smoke off shift, these cleaners work but if hes going to be high at work tell him to practice his yard work skills.

Nah I doubt seriously he will smoke right before work and get high. Reading these posts, I'm convinced that he will be fine.

Yeah this is team too much. I'm not gonna rat on someone who has yet to even apply for a position.

And if they decide to drug test you they have the right to fire you.

It's not about being old enough or about demonizing pot. I'm certainly not doing that. But until things change, and they will, nurses that smoke can lose their jobs.

Generally yes, that is true. The almighty BON can choose to to revoke my license. I refuse their right to try it. I am a human being that can tell the BON to kiss off.

LOL! BTDT, you tell everyone to kiss off! :)

I am no longer just "a nurse". I am an employee of a business that respects and appreciates my nursing skills.Whether or not I partake of the herb.. they don't care. That is MY choice, my employer knows that.

Now where are those Oreos?

Our hospital tests just as a pre-employment screen , unless they suspect you of using on the job. Good thing for me!!

If you're implying that you use an illicit substance...Have you learned anything from reading this thread?

It's not worth it. But as they say, you can lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink, so good luck to you.

Oreos are great, but it's getting real close to pumpkin pie time. Or pecan pie. Or maybe you do apple. Don't forget the ice cream or whipped cream too. ;)

Crust is a lil wobbly.

Maybe it's you can lead a horse to grass, but... Nevermind.
