WCVB channel five Boston, is now airing, Healthcare Uncovered. A live panel show discussing healthcare and it's cost in Boston. The moderator, Timothy Johnson, MD. One of the panelist, Zane, the CEO of Tufts Medical Center whose 1100 RN's just voted 70%, to authorize a one day strike. This is what I just heard and this is verbatim.

"We may need fewer nurses in the hospital, but we will need more in the community, helping patients to stay healthy. so there maybe some modest job losses, I think there is a great opportunity to retrain caregivers in new professions."

"Doesn't the rank and file worry though, if I am dislocated as a healthcare worker. The job that may be available for me on the other end is nothing of the caliber of the job I trained for and gone to school for as a RN or whatever."

They avoid that question and go on about being unable to sustain the hospital budgets. Over half of budgets are employee salaries(nurses). We must address these salaries and benefits and look into job revocation. They go on to justify this thinking, due to small business unable to afford healthcare here in Mass and therefore leaving the state. There are great opportunities to shift our thinking from acute care to physician and patient remaining well. (paraphrase).

Helen Zane: what the trajectory we are on, the public will not tolerate. Better we get ahead of it. ( she is addressing nurses who want better nurse/ patient ratios). Fueling her position, against the nurses.

They go on and defend physicians who do needless test...talk about salaries and fraud in the same sentence. Implying, nurses must make sacrifices...my reading between the lines. Then go to prevention and teaching. Intervention is most important right now. (agree,but, where are nurses in this) Their focus, doctors, PA and NP.

You all need to watch this, there is so much more. Primary care doctors aren't paid enough, but no mention of professional nursing. Again, ANA where are you?? BSN's you are not being addressed at all. They are talking about eliminating your job. They are talking about retraining you and "retooling" your career. And you all are worried about the difficult patient? We need to get busy...are we even listening to what is happening right before our eyes? Are you all satisfied with your degrees when you have no say in policy? Do we even care?

The lie has been told so much, ever since I can remember 27 years ago. All we needed was BSN to get taken seriously...really?

Can you believe the Billions they have spent making their hospitals look prettier. Like a resort. What a joke - yes, rising healthcare costs... duh. Whoever made those decisions should be fired.

I've been out of bedside nursing for a bit over a year. I just read the first five replies and gave up. I think I have landed on another planet. My family practitioner said to my family member: "never argue with an old nurse - you won't win".... so here goes:

I wanted to be a nurse even in elementary school. I took the long way; graduating from school at the age of 41. The school never knew it but during my last semester, at break, I had a TAH. I was so into gettting my nursing degree that I used my abdominal binder and somehow got through. I have always been tough, tenacious and outspoken.

Long story short: I had twenty-two demanding, exciting, pain-in-the-orifice and delightful years. I am now fighting off Parkinson's and it's been a battle...typing this is no fun BUT. If you went into nursing for anything other than the satisfaction of knowing you make a difference and that you CAN make a difference, then do nursing a favor and try a different field.

If we let others determine our nursing "future" then whatever they do to us that limits us from giving our best, we deserve it. You need to make your nursing yours (and save save and save your money so when they do what they want to you because they know they can, you will be able to take care of yourself and your family until nursing itself backs you up and makes things right).

I get that things are a "mess" essentially with our system. LTC sees all kinds of cuts. While I can agree on efficiency, I can't agree at all that our jobs can be so easily disposed of. I see SO MUCH WASTE on a daily basis, needless destruction of millions of dollars in meds, medical supply companies overcharging AND getting reimbursed by our government, fraud, etc. Why are those things allowed to go on and on, and yet our jobs being cut? Leaving one nurse and 1 CNA in charge of 40 people?? Things seem so outrageously out-of-hand....

Wasn't this said in response to the nurses threatening to strike? I wonder how much of it will be retaliation to those that did strike. All of a sudden, written warnings being documented, ect... A prelude to firing a few "difficult" nurses. That's what it sounds like to me. (And, they have an abundance of robot nurses who will be grateful for the crumbs and have a job... Go nursing schools!)

Best thing in my opinion is find a spot in the field that makes you indispensable. Wherever that may be. I don't think the world will ever not need nurses. It just may be restructured in a way that we are not familiar. Just look at the last 30 years-things have changed dramatically. We used to reuse items, we used to not wear gloves, we didn't have MRSA or AIDS, we mixed our own drugs, we didn't have computers or laparoscopic procedures, we calculated our own drips, cut our own pills, we didn't have radiology doing the type of procedures they are doing now. Things are faster, more equipment reliant. Now everything is single use, what's left is donated to 3rd world countries. Years ago we recycled plastic, now it's not cost effective even though we're encouraged to go GREEN. Some things have gotten better and some things have not. So until the bedside nurse has a voice, not those who speak for us we will be sheep. Once away from the bedside folks forget the logistics, the struggles, the interruptions. Patient's expect perfection and so does administration. I love nursing and I love what I bring to the table even though now its considered "Old School" Love to all.

The problem with Mass system is insufficient federal repayment, capitation, and trying to coordinate the 3rd party payers. We need a single FEDERAL payer system, ala France, i.e. REAL socialized medicine. I think fewer nurses are inevitable either way. The money simply isn't there.

Wait until they surrender that.

No. it is NOT logical. The beauty of where we live and way our county is structured has allowed people to progress and better themselves through hard work. We should not punish people for their accomplishments. We should all pay the SAME percentage of tax no matter our current income. Get less of the takers off the grid and make them work for their living too instead of riding on the heals of others.

But ... that is totally a different topic and really has nothing to do with nursing.

To add...I know a lady who is Director of Recruitment and Planning for a major healthcare corporation where I live. We were discussing the projected shortage of nurses. She actually said, "I will probably quit my job and do something else before the big bust happens. We won't have enough nurses, and it's going to be a disaster."

For the next however many years, all these facilities will continue to play the waiting game and not hire. But at some point, this mentality will become a problem. And not just for nursing.
