We finally had our first COVID patient since August come off the ventilator and transfer out of the unit!! He was a vaccinated gentleman, didn't even know he had COVID, he had been admitted post fall and then had altered mental status and respiratory distress, was intubated before the COVID test came back. He was on the vent nine days.
It was so nice to speak with him after caring for him for six of the recent nights. He was so gracious and appreciative, he almost cried when talking about seeing his two little grand daughters for Christmas. The next day we lost a 26 year old, the youngest we have had, so reality returned quickly. But we will all cling to this one success for a while and celebrate for the family that will celebrate one more holiday season with their loved one.

I am thankful for vaccines and improving treatment options.
I need to edit my post. He wasn't the first since August, when this wave began for us, we had a couple back then that were also vaccinated and survived, but he was the first in at least two months. It just felt much longer.
