We got into the CLC Nursing program...now what

Published

OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! :lol2: When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?

I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.

And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need? :uhoh3:

Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!

PS. I guess I should read the other posts before mine, instead of just relying on my notices on my email....I should have know Colleen would have answered before me!!! She is so prompt and ontop of everything. ;)

Nope - has nothing to do with me being "prompt and on top of everything" but more to do with me stalling and farting around because I don't feel like studying for our exam on Friday! Ugh! Wish I could find some motivation....

I know, I don't wanna either. I have been running errands all morning long. I drove out to Kenosha Hospital to see it. It is so cool, right by the lake. I cannot wait until Friday.....after the test.:D

Ok, maybe dumb question...why do they ask you your uniform size on your letter? But really we need to go get our own?

This is SOOO confusing...and WHITE pants! Ewww...I just had a baby, I have a wide butt and white pants won't hide it!

Thanks for the advice on the steths!!!

Not a dumb question at all - in fact I think I remember asking the same thing!

I guess they ask your size so that they can get an idea of how many to tell Tri-County to have on hand of each size. I'm sure they get extras though. Speaking of that, I think I'm going to go get an extra top... we have clinicals two days per week next semester (Wed and Thurs). I don't want to have to worry about needing to do a load of laundry every Wednesday night!

And I hear 'ya on the white pants! The only good thing is that the top (it's really kind of like a smock sort of thing actually) is pretty long, so it kinda hides a bigger butt. I am speaking from experience here - I've got a big butt too - only my baby is 20 years old now, so I don't think I can use that one! And hey, remember... you all wear the same thing. NO ONE looks good in this uniform - trust me!!

I need a nanny so I can get all this stuff done! I need a cleaning, eye exam, physical, 6 week post partum check up, and medical records from my old doctor!! Plus, uniforms, book bag, books, etc. AHHHH!!!

Thanks so much for the info. It was really helpful!

I know, Dawn, I feel like I have a ton of things to do and not enough time. I just started my titres and shots at the health center yesterday. Thankfully I'll be done with that by next Tuesday before they close for winter break! Plus next Thursday I have the CPR class, plus finals the week after!

Thanks again y'all!

Lisa

OK Dawn... take a DEEEEEP breath... blow it out... and repeat... Feel better?

You have LOTS of time for this. Seriously. You will not start clinicals until (if I remember correctly) the 3rd week of class. So technically you have until the beginning of Feb to get uniform stuff. Ideally you'll want it earlier so you're not rushing around, but you've got plenty of time.

I know it seems like a lot. And it is. One thing that helps me is to make a list of all the things I need to do. That way, as I accomplish them, I can just cross them off. It is so satisfying to do that!

How old is your baby again? Make sure you are taking care of yourself. The whole "new mom" thing is overwhelming enough - let alone being a new mom starting nursing school. Yikes! PLEASE take the time to rest when you can!

Just take it one day at a time... it will all come together.

Colleen, the baby is 5 weeks old already! Lucky for me, he is an angel! My daughter had severe reflux AND colic, so he is a breeze, it's just so hard to lug around two little kids, especially with the weather!!

Ok, I had no idea how they start you off, it's good to know you're not immediately thrown into clinicals right off the bat! Do you go to class those first two or three weeks on your clinical day, or not?

Yup, I made a list!! I love lists!

Lisa, I just went to the Health Center today. I called and my insurance will cover all my blood work, so I scheduled my physical for Monday:yeah:. I can't wait to cross things off my list.

Ok, another probably dumb question (I apologize in advance)...what if the shoes have a Nike swoosh on them...but are otherwise white? Is that a big deal???

Yes, you will have class (at CLC) on those days that are your clinical days. There's lots to cover - you'll be learning all kinds of cool stuff - so it is good that they keep you in school only for the first couple weeks.

At least in the case of my 1st semester instructor (Janet), she paired us up for the first one or two clinicals. It was nice, because it wasn't quite so scary going in with another student to meet a patient for the first time. Heather and I had a really nice man for our first patient - not scary at all - but BOY OH BOY were we nervous before going in the first time. Seems so silly now. :p

I would think that the Nike shoes might be ok. I mean, the first day of class I had some comfy Adidas shoes on - just knock around shoes - and Janet had used my shoes as an example, saying that was the most color she'd want to see on a shoe. It had some pretty detailed striping (blue and gold), so I think just a swoosh should be fine. Heather has some pink stitching on her shoes I think, and it's never been a problem. Double check with your instructor though before you wear them for clinicals.

Oh, one more thing... Our first day of class I had to go right to work afterwards, so I dressed in scrubs (I was a medical assistant at the time). Big no-no! Janet said that the "powers that be" really frown upon you wearing scrubs into class. Has to do with germs spreading, etc. Whatever. (You could tell she thought it was a silly rule, but that's the way it goes) Boy did I feel like a dork though!

I'll agree with Colleen and Heather on this one. I have the Duo as well (actually I had mine first :yeah:)!! I also love my Palm T/X. It's super fast and great to shove in your pock

The only thing I can add to Colleen and Heather's post is this:

1) Get scrub pants with as many pockets as possible. You are constantly shoving things in there.

2) Get a "travel fanny pack". Target sells one for around $8. This is great to wear under your scrubs (it's flat) and keep your car key, a few bucks and your drivers license.

Oh, I wanted to ask if it mattered what color the stethoscope was...
