Hi, I'm taking my last pre-req, Microbiology, hoping to get an A... I transferred to WCCCD this semester from Baker. My pre-req grades so far are: Eng 1-A.. A&p 1-A... A&p2- B-... Psychology-C+.. and hopefully will get an A in micro. My question is, how do they calculate the GPA for the 5 prereqs and should I retake psychology??? Also, the nurse info meeting is coming up, what do I bring? Thanks so much...

Hey Alissa. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I am planning to start WCCCD to take pre-reqs so that i can transfer to Oakland Univ for my 2nd career BSN program. Would you mind telling me how you like WCCCD? How are the class schedules and have you done any courses online there? I'm in Woodhaven so the commute is nice.
Any help would be appreciated (sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread).

Make sure you ask questions!!! I attend HFCC and there is a woman in my class that said that her girlfriend's daughter had to drop out of their program because WCCCD lost their accreditation (sp?). I heard from a few people that they were close to losing it, then I heard from her it was gone. I personally don't know, but before you start, make sure you check it out. I know that WCCCD is cheaper for most metro detroiters, but I chose HFCC because they had more accreditations. As important as this is for those of us that truly want it, you don't want to walk a major stumbling block! Hope your plans go well!

If you don't mind my asking, why did you transfer from Baker? Were you happy with Baker or not. I am there right now and am hearing so many mixed things, its very hard to sort out.

WCCCD has not lost their accreditation; if that WERE true, you dont think that the Michigan BON would allow them to keep cranking nurses out, now do you? And according to one of my instructors they are just not NATIONALLY accredited because of some changes made to the program; but hope to be soon. Please look into information before spreading things that you arent sure are true or not, I happen to think WCCCD has a great Nursing Program. Just my

Well said Wyandotte. I am sooooo tired of hearing about this accreditation issue (no offense to the OP). No one that I know that has graduated from WCCCD has had any problems getting nursing jobs (my sister graduated WCCCD 2 years ago and is now a nursing supervisor)moving to other states to practice or going on to obtain higher degrees.
I think it is interesting that this is always brought up in connection to with WCCCD and not with Schoolcraft CC or St. Clair CC, who also don't have NLN accreditation.:icon_roll
First off, I'm not trying to spread anything. I made it very clear that I heard it from others. I just mentioned that she should ask questions before enrolling, just like I did before I selected my school. Furthermore, as far as the other schools go, WCCCD is a bigger campus, able to reach more people as it is more spread out, so the reputation of that school would be talked about much more than Schoolcraft College or St. Clair C.C. I personally have never even heard of St. Clair....Schoolcraft is too far, and have attended WCCCD.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling someone to make sure. Nothing to take offense over! Calm down! I know they don't have the National accreditation, that's why I chose HFCC over it! I would love to have been paying half the price I am now, but that was my decision....I'm not trying to make it someone elses.

To the OP - You do not need to take anything to the information meeting except any specific questions you want to ask. Be sure to get there on time as they did not let anyone in late when I went (door was locked).
After the info meeting I suggest that you ask the nursing advisor for advice about whether you should retake any classes. I've heard rumors about what the lowest GPA accepted has been recently, but I have no idea of what is true or not. Someone else on here may know for certain, but it also probably changes each term.
I am really enjoying my classes and doing well at WCCCD. I have met many great classmates and professors there. I would recommend it to anyone. I am also taking several classes online, which I like. Beware - they are NOT easier than traditional classes. I am really looking forward to starting the nursing program there, planning on the Fall.

When you said calm down, were you speaking to me or to yourself? I simply stated my feelings and some facts regarding a few WCCCD grads. I was not stirred up to a point where I had to calm down. I even said that my statement was directed to you. If you took offense I am sorry but I am tired (I'm not taking offense, just expressing myself) of hearing second and third hand accounts of what is happening at a school that I attend.
People should ask questions but only from people that can give factual, first hand information and not hearsay. When it comes to WCCCD nursing program the best source of info is: 1. Michigan Board of Nursing, 2. WCCCD Nursing Dept., 3. Current and past WCCCD nursing students.
Since this is a DISCUSSION board, that is my 2 cents but if YOU are offended I am sorry, it's not personal. Partially due to the fact that I don't know you :nuke: and it really is not that serious.
I'm not at all offended. As I expected, someone spoke to the fact that it did not come directly from WCCCD. Which is why I plainly stated to ask questions first. I'm not knocking the school in the least seeing as how I am an alumni, but if I were in the position (at any school) to be attending all for not, I would want warning. Business is business as far as schools go. Schools are known for collecting money for classes and not giving practical use outside (no....I'm not speaking of ANY particular school). But they get money per credit hour and other fees....we spend our money for classes....and how many of those classes do we really need for our practical use? There are many students that aren't really oriented on questions to ask for pre-nursing, why not make them aware of what questions to ask?
If my school were in trouble or a hint of it was happening, I would want warning. I attend the school, and I can attest to the fact that they aren't all that great with passing along information. Don't worry, you don't have to worry about me passing any misinformation. If I don't know, I'll say so. And to whom else would I be telling her to ask questions, if not the ones that can give factual information? I didn't tell her to ask me. That was the point of me telling her to ask questions. This discussion came about because I told her to ask questions....was there anything wrong with me telling her that? If I could keep one person from wasting money by checking a school out thoroughly first....that's all that matters. If someone had done the same for me years ago, who knows...I might be done with school by now.

I'm sorry, but are you implying that one may be "wasting their money" by going to Wcccd?
I can surely attest to the fact that all of the prereqs for the nursing program are taken for a reason.
Hello... I am going to give you some advice. Please do not pay too much attention to the negative things that people say about WCCCD on this forum. I can assure you that Wayne County has a very vigorous, competitive program that produces quality nurses. We share Clinical instructors with Eastern and HFCC and other schools.
Although WCCCD does not carry an NLN accredidation, it is by the Michigan Board of Nursing. If you go the the NLN website, you will find that there are not many schools around metro Detroit that are. I am going to tell you that this will not hinder you finding a job when you graduate, or going on for you BSN or MSN. Perhaps by the time you get in the program, they will have the NLN accredidation.
For me, the fact that WCCCD is about 1/3 of the cost as HFCC, and there is NO WAITING LIST, and I plan to go on for my MSN, WCCCD was a no lose situation.
So about your question. With the grades you have, you will have about a 3.4. When I was accepted this past Fall, 3.4 was the minimum to get an acceptance. I would strongly recommend that you retake Psych. I took it online, and getting an A was very doable. I would say that if you get an A in psych, you will most likely get in on your first application.
I would just like to finish off by saying that because of Wayne County's no wait list policy, the students who are accepted into the program have high GPA's, and are generally good students. I promise that all of these prereqs do come into play in the program (except maybe Micro)...and in the end WCCCD has a very high NCLEX pass rates for it's students.
Good luck to you!
