wat's the difference between nursing education of US and PHilippines?

Published

i have so many questions in my mind that i still keep on seeking answers. im a pre-nursing student here in US. My plan really was only to visit my mom who's working here and then go back in the phils. where i will pursue my studies for BSN. But many people have told me that it is way more higher standard to graduate here in US than in PhiLS. That is the only idea i have right now. That's why i want to know or compare the nursing curiculum here in US and in phils. im working on my pre req's at the moment and hopefully apply into the ADN program next fall. IM debating whether to go back in the phils. and continue my studies there or stay here and do the same thing. any information would be greatly appreciated.

hi rinsane...i hope you're still sane, hehehe. :clown:

i'd say that if money isn't a major concern for you, do it here. you've started anyway. going back home, scouting for a school, getting papers fixed will take some time better devoted to actual studying. as to curriculum, i'd say the phils. is fairly competitive. inexpensive and for such lower cost, you'd get a BSN. look around...many filipino nurses do well in the us. that should indicate the phil. nursing curriculum's okay. it may also be helpful to ask yourself---is there any other important need you'd be answering if you stay in the phils. or in the us? in my case, i had to study here because my presence is critical to family here than in the phils.... God bless you.

thank you for the reply nrswnabee.. i hope im not going to be insane on my finals in AP this quarter. I think you're right it might be better if i'd just stay and continue what i started here though i really want to go back in Phils. where all my friends at. I think Im just desperate to go back because all my friends are there and so all the fun things are also happening. I just want to ask u a quick question ..are you a Filipino too?

you're welcome, rinsane. i'm glad you're able to decide what's good for you. you can always make new friends and have fun anywhere... i think what's important now is to focus on your studies. i know it's tough (and could suck the life out of you) but THINK that this studying can't be forever. remember, too, that how you perform at school at this time will certainly come back to you when you seek employment later.

consider yourself blessed and do yourself a big favor by making the most of your opportunity to study in the us. i'm sure mom's gonna be more proud and happy for her darling daughter...

yes, i'm pinay. ...stay well!

im in my junior year now in the philippines...if money is no object, study there the standard and quality is way, way better especially the laboratories. one major advantage of studyng here is that you can actually touch your patient and be able to "practice" with them (with your clinical instructor's supervision of course)and not get sued at.

oh yah?? i notice also that laboratory facilities here in US are far way better than in the philippines. Im keeping in touch with my friends and they keep asking what other stuff im really dealing with here regarding nursing schools and they were amaze. They said that we (here in US) are more advance in tools and other learning stuffs for nursing. Money is always a big deal for me of course...i want also to have a cheaper tuition. i think i want to start a new thread...because i heard that u can pay your diploma when u graduate in the philippines? is that true? it's really sad for me when i first heard it. they say some passed the board becoz they pay for it. THiz whole issue makes the quality of education in the phils. go down.:(

hey...you can encourage your friends back home that while the labs in the us may be a whole lot better but the books we use are the same... facilities could help but ATTITUDE will take you farther. it all boils down to how you make do with what you have. if many pinoys can make it, so can they. di ba?

The PHILIPPINE nursing education is more like of a PRACTICAL application than the US nursing edu.

1. You can IV push the patient, Inject drugs in any route.

2. You can do IV therapy, inject IV catheter.. its all up to you.

3. You can SUTURE here.

4. I experienced helping a mother during labor and delivery, Ive done everything even Internal exam, amniotomy, perineal suturing.

I think thats the big difference, you can TOUCH your patient here and you are not in anyway responsible even if you commit a mistake, its all up to your CI which are most of the time, NICE and will let you do anything you want.

Under RA 9173 , Nursing student is not in anyway responsible for mistakes he commited blah blah... so when im on duty im really aggressive and do everything i can do to learn....

Sad but true, some schools allow their students to graduate even if the student is not capable of being a nurse($$$ is power). But, before you can be a RN, you have to pass the board exams and that is something money can' buy->KNOWLEDGE

Wow i envy you dude, some of my C.Is doesnt allow me to do IV insertion, but whenever im assigned in a GOVERNMENT hospitals and the CI is an inhouse, i can do anything i please. :D

where do you study?

For me, the education here and back in the Philippines are comparable. It is basically up to you to learn as much as you can wherever you are. I finished my BSN in the Philippines and am now working in a hospital in my hometown. I was really scared at first because the hospitals in the Philippines where I did my clinical rotations were nowhere near as advanced as the hospitals here in the US. (I went to a university in the province where most of my relatives still live.) But you know what? I think I did pretty well. You know why? During your interview, let them know what your experiences are or lack thereof, and let them know that you are willing to learn. When they hire you, most hospitals will have a new grad orientation anyway. There you will learn what you didn't experience in the Philippines.

For me, going back to the Philippines was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Upon graduating, I didn't have a student load I had to worry about. I had planned on going to UCLA to get my BSN. I had so much fun with the "hands-on experiences" that I had. You will never experience that here in the States. I cannot even count how many babies I have delivered here in this world while I was a student. Student nurses here in the states won't have that experience. They just get to watch.

But if you are happy where you are at, then stay there. When I made the decision to go back for college, it was because I was impatient. I didn't want to wait that long just to get a BSN and I didn't want to pay that much. :)
