I'm the nurse that's obsessed with the pacific northwest. I found some property that I want to purchase. It's approx 5 acres in the city of Shelton. The sellers are asking around 60,000 for it. It has electric and water with road access. I've been hunting for property in the NW for years, and this seems cheap and is not too far from Olympia, where I know there has to be at least one hospital. Is there something wrong with this area--high crime, low income area? Also can you tell me of some good, long orientation (keep their word), teaching hospitals. I graduated in Dec. 2003, but I pretty much went into school nursing. Need I say more.

I was talking to a friend who feels the way I do about the NW, (and lives in the same horrible area that I live in), and she was telling me that she was walking out of a grocery store up there and there was a mountain across the street and how amazed she was with the idea of a mountain being across the way. I replied to her that I had the exact same thought with the only difference being that I was at a K-mart. I told her the people that have lived there a long time probably don't see the mountains anymore. I just don't think, God willing, that when I get up there I could ever stop seeing the mountains, or the super tall trees, or ever get used to breathing in that fresh, cool, dry air. I so look forward to the day.

Hey...my hubby may take a job in Bremerton...right up Hwy 3 from Shelton. Its a beautiful area up there isn't it?? I also love the mountain views and driving up the coast and seeing the beautiful scenery.

I have similar questions as yours and hope someone answers here. :)

I have to say, I wonder about people who buy land "out in the country" and then wonder why it doesn't stay "the country".

I live in Olympia. It is really beautiful. I have the most gorgeous view of Mt. Rainier (and all the foothills) from my front door. Believe me, we still lose our breath at the sight of it - especially in the morning with it silhouetted against the pink sky. I think we really appreciate it because it's rare that we actually see it. It rains so much around here that it's usually clouded in.

There are 2 hospitals in Olympia - Providence St. Peter and Capital Medical Center. There's also a hospital in Shelton.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Shelton. The prices are definitely cheaper than Olympia. I don't think the houses appreciate as fast there. It's a little more of a rustic logging town than Olympia. Olympia's growing like crazy. It's nearly impossible to get 5 acres for 60k here anymore. Properties are skyrocketing here. Last year the average home price was 195k in March and 222k by November. It's still a great deal compared to Seattle, however.

Shelton, is a good town. I have lived here for two years.I moved to WA almost 5 years ago from the midwest. I first lived in the Seattle area and then moved down to Cetraila. My sig-other is from Shelton. I like it hear as it is kinda of in the middle of every where. 20 minutes to Olympia, 30 to Bremerton, 2 hours from the beaches. YOu can see the moutians here and the sound.

I do not think the crime rate is higher than any other small city.

That area is a nice one: has a great quilt shop too! I have a killer view of Mt. Rainier from one side of my house and it's a treat every day. And I disagree with the poster who said we rarely get to see it. On any given day, you'll see it or at least a bit of it, peaking through those lenticular cloudsd! It's awesome! After living here for 18 years, we still say, "oh, look, the Mountain is out!"

After DH retires in just under 3 years now, we plan to move from East Pierce County to west of Chehalis, to an even more rural (at least for now) area. The one we're in now is getting way too overgrown for our tastes.

Thanks to all for your replies. Since my last post on this subject, I have found several "sounds-promising" properties around this area. My husband and I plan on going up there in early March to look around. I made him promise me that when we go there, we will buy a piece of property. I'll also visit the hospitals in the surrounding area. I can't wait. My dream will be a reality.
