Was nursing school fun?

I start NS next semester, and as guy, I don't know what to expect. I understand that nursing school is going to be very stressful but I want to know how people truly thought about it? Was it more "fun" than say pre-req classes like anatomy/microbiology, or even a CNA class (because I enjoyed my CNA class clinicals)? How are clinicals? are they even more stressful than lecture, are there fun moments in clinicals?

I know this is different everywhere you go, but my class of 60 was about 1/3 male. This is very new. All out teachers kept referring to the nurse in the feminine, and kept having to correct herself. This is the one profession I know of that has historically been predominantly female. The only problem that I ever saw was clients wanting a female nurse. All you can do is respect their request and try not to take it personally, it's not your fault. Clinical is the most fun part of RN school. The best advice I can give is to stick your nose in everything. Set a goal for the day and work like crazy to get to it. Tell your nurse what your goal is and (s)he will typically work to get it for you. Lecture and tests were stressful, clinical was FUN!

What is the general consensus on women's opinions toward male nursing students? I know it sounds corny, but do females, whether they are or are not in nursing school with males, find it "sexy"?

It's very stressful but it's fun as well. I'm about to graduate in May and I've been through so much with the people I've been with, from the stresses of tests to sharing stories of the horrors of bed baths.

I've had more fun and learnt the most in clinicals than any other portion of the class. Sometimes it can be pretty depressing but if you have a good clinical instructor and the rest of the people in your clinical group are fun, then the clinical will be fun. How can poking people with needles not be fun? =D

Most of the stresses come from classes unless you have a craptastic clinical instructor that stresses you out for no reason at all.

In regards to female consensus on male nursing students - I've never seen or heard of an issue. In regards to the sexy thing - I know some people in my nursing classes hooked up but if I was you, I would try to steer clear of such things because it gets in the way of your learning in the long run.

The answer is going to be very specific to the personality of the student and the conditions of the class, clinical, etc.

I (me) have found nursing school to be five parts B.S., three parts busy work, and two parts interesting. Fun? Never. I can honestly say that I have done nothing fun. Some of the classes have been more interesting than others. Some have been easier than others. A few have been nothing but trivial wastes of academic dollars. Any of the med-surg-oriented clinicals have been for me a mind numbing and grueling experience that have done nothing but reiterate my disdain for that entire field of nursing. Addictions was alright albeit that was only a four hour experience during which I didn't do anything hands on although I like hands off. I thought ICU would be interesting. It wasn't. OR wasn't. ER was better than the others, but because I did so much ER time in paramedic school a long time ago it still wasn't that cool to me because of the "been there, done that" aspect of it. I'd done time in the OR and ICU as well, but far less.

In short, it wasn't fun, but it wasn't exactly a kick in the balls either.

so do you regret going to school for nursing? Has nursing school destroyed your interest in the profession?

Yep and pretty much.

I have no desire whatsoever to take a position requiring a lot of, if any, hands on patient care. Could I do it for a while? Yes. Would I be happy? Nope. Would it be to get myself into something better? Most certainly.

What interests have arisen in nursing school?

Psychiatrics: psychotherapy and psychotropics

Administration: healthcare finance and policy

Can I do either as a new RN? Sadly, no.

almost done with the first semester, so far its been fun for me. lecture classes are a piece of cake and I've never been surrounded by so many beautiful women until nursing school. too bad im married though :(

That's unusual for me to here, I've heard that the lecture classes are insanely difficult, which confuses me because thought I have a 4.0 in my pre reqs, I don't know what to expect.

The best way to describe nursing school is that it's not HARD, but it is ALOT. There is ALOT of stuff (necessary and not) that they make you do. There are fun days and suck days. The theory part (lectures and tests) are 80% suck and 20% fun. Clinicals (in our program 1st semester is Nursing Home) are 50/50. I was blessed with a good clinical group and that makes it much easier to deal with bed baths and brief changes. I don't think the female nursing students will find you any sexier as a classmate than they would in any other situation in life. If you are smart, considerate, have a good personality and they feel like you are in nursing school for the right reason it will help. If you goof off, make it obvious you are trying to hook up, and try to get by on things because you are a guy, they will smell that a mile away and you are done. Good luck, just focus on school, there will be plenty to do and worrying about being "sexy" is not one of them. :)
