Wanting to leave nursing- other job opportunities in New Zealand with a BHSC degree?

Published

Hello fellow nurses,

I have been a nurse for a little over 2 years and have changed jobs 3 times (from gen med, agency nursing home and now back at the hospital as a chemo nurse). I have changed jobs to find a position where I had good hours, a low stress environment and leave the bullying from the first job.

Unfortunately despite changing jobs I am still very burnt out and unhappy as a nurse, still very stressed out from the work environment and still finding that I'm being bullied by more senior nurses/ patronized and made to feel incompetent (which is very exhausting).

I could write a very long essay as to why I'm burnt out and completely desilusioned with my career but I think that has been covered well by other nurses.

I have also developed a mild anxiety disorder and I'm struggling at work because of this. In a way this is the main reason for wanting to leave. I need to look after myself now..

I wanted to ask whether anyone has successfully left nursing to find another job or career with their BHSc degree? It would be such a shame to not be able to use my degree for another job/career. It was 4 years worth of sacrifice (including my postgraduate year).

Thank you for your time and I appreciate any advice.

What about practice nursing?Or community nursing? You'd be working more independently and have better hours.

Specializes in ED, med-surg, peri op.

I'm a new grad in nz, and I feel the same way. I got my first job in a different hospital to where I trained, and have found it really difficult to fit in here. Everything is just so different. And I've come ofcourse a few rude older nurses, who complained about me and now I have a bad reputation. I'm determined to make it through my first year, and then will be leaving.

I think you should stick it out as a chemo nurse for now, as you get more experience with chemo, hopefully other staff will become tolerable. But also changing jobs constantly give you a bad look. Stick it out for a while and if things don't get better change. With 3 years experience you could teach at a polytechnic nursing course, practise nursing, well child nursing, health line, public health, blood bank, out pts which all seem to be good hours and good places to work too.

What didn't you like about your nursing career? Looking to move to Australia in the future and would love some insight on what to expect before making a decision...Thanks!
