Want to emigrate - need advice!

Published

Hi - my wife and I would like to emigrate to the US (specifically Arizona, probably Tucson) We are both experienced emergency nurses, and are keen to get there as soon as possible. Can anyone advise me on whether I need CGFNS as well as NCLEX? Is it easy enough to do yourself, and has anyone here done it? I hear if we go through an agency we may have to work in a hospital that is allocated, rather than one we choose, and the wages would be lower. :uhoh3:

If that's the case, I'd rather do the work myself and work in the hospital of my choice! All advice gratefully received. Andrew

Can I suggest you go and look through this thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f75/quickest-way-getting-things-done-licensed-us-98305.html and then come back and ask specific questions? There is a lot of information there that might help you!

Best wishes for your emigration plans

Good on you! That was very helpful, thanks - I have to say, they don't make it easy!:uhoh21:

In a nutshell, Arizona requires the CES report, done by CGFNS, for even getting permission to be able to register to sit for the NCLEX exam, then the NCLEX exam, as well as a Visa Screen Certificate.

There is no fast way, even for those from the US that wish to work in the UK.

You are much further ahead from the UK to go as a direct hire to the US, and especially Arizona. You will also get things handled much quicker.

But first question that I have for the two of you, when did you graduate from your nursing programs? If fairly recent, your training may not meet the requirements of the US without taking a few more classes.

Thanks Suzanne - I qualified in 1995, Liz in 1991 - I don't hink there was a lot of differencre, although I don't think she got as much O+G as I did.......

you should be OK with that training but best way is to apply for CES report with CGFNS

Process will still take approx 12 months before you can move but good luck on your journey

Thanks Anna - got a pile of NCLEX study books today - quite a different format than we're used to, and can see lots of work ahead, especially with drugs........ Andrew

Return them all except for the Saunder's Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN and follow what I have posted in a sticky on the NCLEX forum to get you started. And save yourself some money, you only need the one book.:)

Most are not geared towards a foreign grad and will only get you more confused, especially if you have both been out of schhol for that long. On top of all of the new information.:)

Good Luck with it all. I have been here 3 months (in Florida) and so far so good although it was a tough start.
