Hi! Everyone,
I recently finished my Vulnerable Position Screening (Police Check) in Ontario. The report indicates "Does have information on file that may be relevant to the position noted on this form". Does anybody know that can this information affect my registration in the future through CNO? How about my potential employer.
I just finished my 4-year BScN and am going to write my RN exam on June 1st. I requested for an appeal after I received this form but it was not successful. I have no criminal record and did not have problem to go to clinic placement in the school, but I begin to worry about my registration now. I called CNO a few days ago, but the person on the phone didn't know.
Do you have any idea about my issue?
Thanks!

That depends. If you have ever had a record, or been convicted of anything, or been involved in any criminal activity at some point (other than as a young offender) you are required to be honest on your application to the CNO and say yes. If you lie, and they find out, your license would be revoked. I don't know your history, nor do I care to, but this is something for you to think about.

Hi Mike2008,
Were you involved in anything related to a criminal offence or brought in for questioning related to an event in the past?
The Vulnerable Screening (police record check) is different than a basic Criminal Record check (where you have been convicted of a crime), and it is more thorough. If you have any traffic violations, accusations, etc.. it will be recorded in the CPIC database, even if charges were dropped or disregarded, it will still show up when they search your name and birthdate. Because you will be with around the "vulnerable" (e.i children, elderly), I assume that they would be looking for something related to drug abuse or sexual offence. So, if something happened to you in the past, as long as you explain your actions to the employer and be honest, they may let it go.
Can I ask you if something happened in the recent years where you may have had an "issue" with the law?
Thanks a lot for your reply. joanna73 and cccormier,
I was involved in a fight in 2009 and was charged with"Assault with weapon". The police men did not have the"weapon" (because there was no weapon involved) and no witness. I hired a lawyer and I only attended the first hearing. After two weeks, the lawyer told me the charge was withdrawn. I thought I wouldn't affect my annually police check. I even didn't notice they indicated "Does have infrmation on the file that may relevant" last year and handed it in to the nursing school.
My recently police check has caught my attention because they attached a notice says I can appeal their decision. The form is still showing I have NO criminal record. I am thinking to hire a lawyer to fix the problem, but if CNO and employers don't care, I want to save this big money.
Any suggestions?

Alot of jobs require clean criminal checks and they state so in the advertisement they have. I know doing homecare I have to provide a new police check every year that has to be clean so I can continue to work with pediatric clients. It might be worth it just to have a clean criminal record so that you are not limited in the jobs that you can aquire, and especially with the tightened border securities as well.
Same applies to LTC. They want a clean record. This is also a competitive market, so I think you are going to have issues getting employment, since they can afford to be picky.

One of my classmates has something on his record check too. He said something about an appeal, but it's going to cost $700 or something. I can't really remember. Also, I think he might have said something about soon you you won't be able to appeal because of a new law or regulation or something. It might be worth looking into, cause if that's the case you may want to deal with it now. BTW.. I'm in Ontario too
ps.... sorry my memory is so fuzzy on this but I'll try and find out exactly what he said.
It's me again. I already passed the RN exam and sent all documentation to CNO. Right now, my application is sent to Registration Committee for reviewing because of my police check issue. From the information of CNO web site: http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/new-applicants/ontario1/requirements-for-becoming-a-nurse-in-ontario/requirement-7/
The answers of all the questions applying to my case are NOs.
CNO received my file on July, 18, 2011 and I am still waiting.
I already got a RN job and am finishing my orientation. I requested the police service to delete my record and it is still in process.
I am very frustrated for the waiting and I don't know what is going to happen.
Anyone can help me here?
Mike
