Very Interesting Idea!

So teaching has always been #2 for me, no matter what. Before nursing, when I was in Elementary school I wanted to be a cook, teacher #2. Now nursing, but teaching still #2.

I saw a very cool post, and someone want's to teach health and be the part time nurse! That's awesome! That's so cool, every so often my career narrows and soon (or even now) I see it becoming clearer and clearer on what I wanna do!

It went

Chef, then I found out I love rush and medicine.

So I went to fire fighting.

I later learned, I wouldn't have that great of a schedule and 90% are volunteers.

So I went to Optometry/Ophthalmology. I later learned, I'm not interest in just one subject but still love medicine and rush.

Finally, nursing. Nursing has lasted the longest, and my mind is more developed and ready than back in middle school. The other jobs I was iffy on, and I almost knew it would change. This one, I'm set. Nursing is what I want to do, but if I could do my #1 and #2 job together, that would be so great. ( And I can practice culinary arts on weekends and maybe I'll even put out a fire or two! ;) And look at those pink eyes that seem to always come up in kids D: !)

But I'd love to teach Health (Medicine/ Nutrition / Exercise / Life Healthiness )

And then work part time as the nurse as well.

Maybe this will be way later in my life, as I would also love working in a hospital setting. Like Flight/Nicu/Picu/ER.

Maybe I can get my nursing degree and qualify for teaching there later in life.

And while I'm young work in the hospital and do the above, and then go teach when I'm older. (Not to much though!)

So, do you think that'd be a option? Teaching health and being the nurse at the school?

If not, I'm perfectly fine with just being a nurse. That'd be just fine with me!

Nursing already has plenty of teaching in it!:D But helping kids be safer and have healthier lives, before needing to come to the nurses office..is even better:)

I am currently the School Nurse and teach Health in my Elementary School. It's not easy and makes my days very hectic BUT I love it!!! It's not common but you can find it. In NY the position is called a School Nurse-Teacher. You become an RN with a Bachelors and then get additional education to get the Nurse-teacher certification. Good Luck!

During my first school nurse position I had to teach a one day HIV class to the 8th graders. I was terrified but I loved it so much! When I was little I didn't know if I wanted to be a Teacher or a Doctor. I met in the middle and became a School Nurse! In my State School Nurses have to get a credential through a program and one program has a special credential School Nurses can get to teach health from Kinder to Adult. Spidey's mom posted a link to it in the School Nurse Teacher thread. I would love to do that and get a position at the local Community College teaching Health on the side. I don't think I could do it at my District because I'm the only Nurse and Health person period. It was difficult doing the HIV class because I got a call during my class with the boys and had to end earlier than the girls.

We don't have school nurse teachers in our state. I would enjoy that though. I don't have lots of extra time to teach as a school nurse-too many other responsibilities. Not much "rush" as a school nurse or a teacher. You could always get your master's degree as a nurse educator and become a nurse instructor. I know some nurse instructors who also work part-time at the hospital. Almost all of nursing has lots of teaching so if you find a unit you enjoy working on then you'll always be teaching your patients and that may cure your teaching bug along with the "rush" of a fast-paced unit. You could always get your hospital rush when you're younger and go into teaching when you get older. Lots of options. I think you just need more experience to find out what you will really enjoy.
