Very discouraged. Thinking about quitting.

Hello everyone.

I just found out that I am selected to start my ASN for RN this August.

However, I heard how difficult it can really be and how there is a lot of reading.

I knew what I was getting into and with confidence and willingness I stepped into Nursing.

But now I realize I may not have what it takes to get through the program. Nor do I think I would be a good nurse. When I looked at the level of patient care I thought I could handle it. I have never been afraid of approaching anything in college. This is the first time I am afraid. I don't want to get into it, waste time and money, only to find out I'm not good at it or I can't handle the unnecessary workload.

I was thinking about dropping the RN program and just going LPN. I just want to go to school for a year and get a job to support myself. I am 30 years old and I don't think I have the emotional capacity to handle the workload stress of nursing program. I have been through a lot of stress in my twenties and my body is like saying, "no more, no more." I am afraid, I thought I could do it, but starting to rethink it. I have a feeling I made a mistake and should have done LPN. LPN is one year, I could get a job, and skip the unnecessary stress of RN. Perhaps someone who has been through this can offer some advice. What is the nursing program like? Why is it so stressful? Why do they make it stressful?

I've never been in an LVN program, so I can't compare it to an RN one. I can tell you that we all put up with the same **** once we graduate and start working, though.

I did it with a family , a full time job and as a full time RN student . Maybe you are just afraid of this new event in your life ? We often feel afraid of the unknown. If you are going to regret not going to nursing school later on , then I will advice you to go for it ! I think the stress of nursing school can prepare us mentally for the real world . Not all nursing is bad and stressful anyways . Good luck !

The LPN program is just as stressful as the RN program. You will Wish you had gotten your RN for better pay and more opportunities.

First, I want to wish you good luck in whatever you decide.

Second, I want to respectfully tell you that you apparently have some fairly large misconceptions about LPN programs. What you call "workload stress" is very real and very much a challenge in nursing school, whether you are in an RN or LPN program. But you're right, most LPN schools will have 12-15 month programs, so getting through your program in less time may be a factor in your decision.

Also, if you read some of the posts on this site, you will see that "unnecessary" ( I think of them as "unrealistic", not "unnecessary") workloads are common in the field of nursing, no matter what type of facility you may choose to work for, and no matter what your level of nursing education is.

Again, good luck in whatever you decide.
