Very confused Nursing or MD?

Published

Hi,

Im currently 20 years old and taking some prenursing classes. I am very confused to go into medical school or nursing. to be honest I love helping people. My partner is an RN. The only thing that attracts me to MD is the salary. My goal is to be making no less then 130,000 a year.. Can anyone help me chose! Please Thank You

I don't really understand your confusion... they're completely different professions...

I agree with the poster above; doctors treat diseases, nurses treat people.

Good luck with your choice!!!

good morning,

i wanted to take the time to thank all your support and help with my confusion. after doing some research and attending a pre-medical orientation at ucsd.. i have decided to go to medical school. my specialty will be ob/gyn.

once again thank you

It's telling of your youth that you so clearly state what your specialty will be as if it is written in stone. You realize it isn't so simple as just saying "I'm going to be a doctor. My specialty will be xx." You will have to get the right grades in medical school and the right scores on the USMLEs before you can make such a certain statement about what you will specialize in. That is granting you get into medical school to begin with. Even if you make it into medical school, you may wind up finding that primary care and a few other things you don't like so much are the only residencies that will accept you. I don't mean to burst your bubble, but if you decide to go to medical school you need to keep an open mind about what you may wind up doing. That is just something that comes along with it.

Well I know a few doctors that have stated there specialty since they are 15 years old. to be honest you didnt burst any bubble. i know what im capable and with hard work I can achieve anything.. but thanks for your reponse.

Well those doctors that knew their specialty since they were 15 years old were passionate about the profession. You made it clear that your only reason for wanting to become an MD is for the money. Come back here 12 years from now when your done with your studies and let us know if you made it. ;)

Yes for sure I will be back to post my graduation date! One question are u a doctor? I have a feeling you are not and that is why you dont think anyone else can make it. :w00t:

It sounds like you've picked a path and I say go for it. Realize that things change though and you may decide you like something else along the way. I was pre-med way back when and even though I've decided to go into nursing, I don't regret not pursuing medical school. I don't think being a doctor would've been my best choice.

There are some forums with medical students on them and I'd recommend perusing those. I did last year before deciding on nursing because I wanted to make sure that medical school wasn't what I wanted and it isn't. Best of luck to you.

Jaime1990, good luck in medical school. I'm sure that with hard work you can succeed, in OB/GYN if that's where your passion is.

You are going to face a lot of adversity and criticism from many people. It pays to learn to brush it off rather than arguing or coming up with a sarcastic reply and, ultimately, it's more professional. I mention this because your reply to Highschoolfuturenurs sounds condescending, as though becoming an MD is the best and nursing is what people do when they fail at med school. I'm sure that is not what you meant and, granted, the other poster was critical as well, but you'll do well to not get caught up in catty behavior. You'll end up alientating other people and let me tell you that as an MD, nurses can be your best friend or they can make your life difficult. It pays to be respectful, whether you feel offended or not.

Best wishes!

The above is excellent advice. Congratulations on having made a difficult decision. The only caution/advice I would offer, having spent 20 years working in teaching hospitals, the last 10 directly for Faculty is this: success is easy when you are the top 5% of your class, much harder when you are a member of the group of 50 representing the top 2% of schools from several states.

Good luck and Godspeed.:)

Sounds like you need to go to business. You can also help people and you will achieve the fast track for money . Good luck.

Let me preface this by saying I have not yet read the previous comments so this may be a bit redundant. If you want to make that much, become a NP or if you're really up for a challenge but not as big of a challenge as medical school... CRNA! They easily make that amount or more. The health field is not one you want to enter for the money, though. Pharmaceutical sales and medical device sales also can pay very well if you're money-motivated and good at sales. Good luck on which ever path you choose!

I agree. Medical device sales is also a good one if you're motivated by money but still want to work in the healthcare field.
