VCU's accelerated program 2015

Published

Hi all!

I'ved applied to VCU's 2015 accelerated BS program and now am waiting for January to come...3 months is going to go by too slowly but I'm so excited too!

I'm reaching out to any current applicants to learn about you and your background...please share! :) I'm currently an Athletic Trainer and have been working in this field for the past 11 years but have decided to take a turn in my career and become a nurse! I'm hoping my experiences will be in my favor.

Also reaching out to previous & current students to ask you your tips for success in the program. Please share anything that works for you!

Hi all,

I have also applied and am still waiting for the "completed and ready for review" email, as well.

Is it true that there are 400 applicants? I went to an info session and I thought it was 400 applications, but only 225 or so have actually made it through to "complete" status? Does anyone know for sure?

Yeah, that sounds familiar from the orientation. accordingly only about half the applicants end of being qualified (but that sounds a bit too high)

ph33rbenkthankslol-- my page looks like that too. have you maybe checked your spam folder? and i have no idea what it means by the "application preference: not entered". and thanks yeah I did apply to their CNL program. are you applying anywhere else?

oh oops i didn't see that people already answered the question about the email issue haha. and i'm pretty sure that you're right about only half of all applicants or so are actually "qualified" and i guess all that really means is that they've done all the pre-reqs or are working on them, have the appropriate gpa above their minimum, and turned in everything needed for the application, so not necessarily "highly" qualified but just meet the standards

Not yet,

Honestly, VCU seems like my only option right now. Although I am considering George Mason and Old Dominion I don;t really know much about the others and I'm restricting myself to In-state State schools (so no Georgetown, GW, Marymount and Liberty)

I would like to know what your input is on other school ABSN programs

I'm also applying to gmu/odu if i dont get into the other schools. I've alright things about gmu and odu but all that i really know about them is what i've read on other threads. i know that with gmu theres a bit of a commute involved with going to clinicals. and norfolk is not too ideal of a place for me just due to crime rates and since odu is in norfolk itself, i'm not too keen about going there (assuming i get in haha). i'm really banking on getting into vcu or uva but my gpa isn't the best and i didn't get all a's in my pre-reqs. i'm pretty much relying on my personal statement, work experience, and recommendations

I still have to finish my pre-reqs in the Spring but the admissions counselor said that was OK. I'm really hoping for VCU since I already live in Richmond.

nfc14 I havea question about housing in Richmond, Where would you recommend as a good (cheap place to live for a nursing student?

Is there free transport (buses) to get to school around the city?

Thanks,

I'm getting my undergraduate degrees from GMU, and the main detractors for are 1. the hospital is a commute and 2. the cost of living in Fairfax/northern Virginia is really damn high.

Chances are I wouldn't go to Gmu even if I got accepted

I am eyeing Old Dominion though but I still don't know too much about their program

Hi Ph33rbenkthankslol,

I live in Shockoe Bottom which is a 5 minute drive and 20 min. walk to VCU. There are several apartments down here and you can find a one bedroom for ~$950 - $1100, everything included (utilities, cable, wifi). The Fan area is also a nice area to live that is only ~10 - 15 minute drive. Houses and apts. are older and utilities are usually separate and can be expensive in the winter months, however, neighborhoods are quiet and quaint. There are definitely plenty of transport buses from commuter parking lots at VCU.

I got my "application complete" email today, horray!!!

Thank You for the info much appreciated. I'm guessing 90-1100 is per month? I was hoping there would be cheaper areas.

Thanks though,

Hi Ph33rbenkthankslol,

Yes, $900 - 1150 per month for all utilities, cable, wifi. There are cheaper areas if you are willing to commute a bit longer. I don't think you can really get anything substantial for less than $800 / month close to school. I've only been in the area for 3 years so I may not have all of my bases covered....
