VCU ABSN 2023 Waitlisted

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello! I just received my admissions decision for VCU's (Virginia Commonwealth University) ABSN 2023 program. I got waitlisted which is disappointing but I was wondering how many people they usually accept from the waitlist. Also, was anyone else accepted or waitlisted? I hope you all have a good day!

I was right at a 3.0 so not the highest GPA but im an LPN too so I was hoping that would help?

You?

I honestly don't know my overall GPA. I went to 4 different schools. My B.S. GPA from 2020 was I believe a 3.2 or so. My prerequisites GPA was a 3.8 BUT they didn't see that GPA bc that included fall 2022 classes. I wish they waited till those grades posted bc I'm sure other applicants had classes that fall that they were hoping would count too.

I applied to GMU. GMU is right by my house, but I really want to go to VCU even though I'd have to move. Those are the only two schools I applied to.
I have NO medical background btw. I thought I had a solid personal statement and references though. I think those are what got me on the wait list.
also, I did attend VCU for a semester years ago and my GPA that one semester was a 2.0

My Overall GPA was also a 3.2 and my prereq GPA was a 3.2. I have not finished Microbiology yet so hopefully that goes up. Why do you want VCU more than GMU?

I was also waitlisted :( I have a 3.8 GPA, but have 2 pre-reqs in progress so I'm hoping by sending an updated transcript that helps? IDK but I'm bummed.

An overall 3.8 GPA is really good. Honestly I think there were just a lot of applicants that qualified.

I'd rather go to VCU because the program is a bit longer, which would give me time to really absorb what im learning since I don't have a medical background, overall VCU is a really great nursing school.

GMU's program is shorter so it makes me nervous. Although it's more affordable. They only have about 60 slots I believe, so a bit more competitive than VCU.

Do we know how soon they will start pulling people off the waitlist?

So I can't give a concrete answer, but from my experience, people were pulled off the waitlist at a much higher rate about 1-1.5 months before classes started last year. It seemed to be about 8-10 (that's a very rough estimate).

I applied for the VCU ABSN 2022 cohort and was waitlisted, but unfortunately never got pulled off. I had 4 pre reqs in progress at the time, but did notice some students say they were accepted and still had to complete some of their classes!

I did reapply and got accepted into the 2023 ABSN cohort. I wish you all the best of luck!

What did you do in the mean time between applying to the 2022 cohort and 2023 cohort? Did you do something like CNA or med assistant to help your application? I am trying to decide what kind of job I should be looking for.

Although I did consider it, I didn't do anything differently between applications. Once I finished my pre reqs last May and realized I wasn't being accepted I stayed with my job in mental health. I couldn't justify leaving to work 4-5 months in a new position before the next application was due.

Sorry I wasn't of more help.

If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA when you applied?

no problem. it was around ~3.7 or 3.8 I believe. I have grades from 2 schools so im not entirely positive how they factor them together. for the  prerequisites I've taken I have a 4.0 but also haven't finished all of them yet.

Anyone else besides me have 0 background on the medical field and a non-science degree? I'm really upset that I didn't get in, but I'm a bit glad that I atleast got on the waitlist list

hey! just found something out I thought would be worth sharing. someone I know who completed this program in 2019 (I believe maybe 2020) got off the waitlist like 2 weeks before it started. so I would say keep hopes up and good luck!
