Vandy Nurse Residency ?s

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

hi there ladies and gents! i am currently a student in an associate's degree program, due to graduate in early june. i'm in the process of applying to vanderbilt's nurse residency program for july of this year ('09). can anyone give me pointers as to what they're looking for in the application/letter of goal intentions? (and should i be lucky enough to receive an interview, what should i expect during that?) i'm a bit nervous because i'm sure there are a lot of people vying for a spot in the program. will the fact that i am from out of state, and will only have an adn as opposed to a bsn make me less attractive as a candidate? (this is my 5th year of college, but i had a different major at a 4-year university before changing schools.) any answers or tips that you all could give me would be appreciated very much! i love nashville and have been looking forward to graduating so that i can move there, and the program at sounds like such an enriching and wonderful opportunity; i just want to do all that i can with my app to give myself the best chance. lastly (sorry for all the questions!), how quick is the tn board of nursing at granting licensure if you pass your nclex and are registered in another state? thanks a million folks! have a good one:typing

Kris,

I haven't found out about the license transfer yet. I figured I'd better focus on getting through the interview first, and deall with that headache if I get an offer. (I might just go ahead and take it in TN) Anyhow, I don't have any idea about relocation pay; seems reasonable, but I'm sure that'll be something you could ask 'em before signing your contract if they give you an offer. Good luck on your interview! Post on here and let me know how it goes, will ya? Thanks :)

Hey guys, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think they pay any relocation expenses at all. At least not for the residency program. We've got quite a few people from out of state and I haven't heard anyone say anything about that. Also, so far we haven't signed any kind of contract either. I don't know if there is such a thing. Just thought I'd share that with you.

Any updates on this residency program!? How did your interviews go?? Are they still continuing the program like usual in this economy/nursing surplus?

Im trying to get a feel for when im on my job search this time next year!!

Does anyone know if this residency requires bsn, certain # of patient tech/externship hours??

Thanks so much and hope you all found your dream job!!

Well, I got the position and start July 6th! I'm still waiting on my informational packet and have a lot to figure out in the next couple of months as we plan our move down to Tennessee.

Hi Kris529,

Congratulations OUNurse and Kris529!! You must be so excited!!

Would you guys mind sharing your stats? BSN/ADN, GPA, Patient care/externship hours? Maybe in private message :)

Its good to see they are continuing the program in this economy!!

Hi there!

I am an ADN graduate with a previous BA in Psychology. My ADN GPA was 3.97. I did not have any patient care or externship hours, but I applied for the pediatric track and have been working as a clinical research assistant at a large children's hospital for two years.

Hope this information helps! Let me know if you have any other questions...I'm happy to help : )

That sounds good! My first track was Women's Health and 2nd was OR (although I found out later it wasn't actually OR and more of the surgical step-down variety). Third was ICU, but I think I am going to be doing Adult Health??? Lol

They didn't accept anyone for Women's Health this round and combined both Adult Surgery with Adult Health, so I am just grateful that I got chosen at all. They did say, however, that I could transfer to OB after 6 months. We'll see!

Congratulations OUNurse and Kris529!! You must be so excited!!

No problem at all. I am graduating with a ADN degree. My GPA is 3.5. The only patient care I've done has been in clinical experience.

I am glad they are continuing the program despite the economy, but there have been some major cutbacks as stated in my previous post! :(

hey there kris and ounurse, congrats! i got in to the program too, in the adult health track. (adult med was my 1st choice). ounurse, i'm from ohio too! what part are you from? when will you all be moving down, and will you be taking your nclex before you go or after? (we don't graduate until june 11th, so with paperwork turnaround time, i think i'm going to have to sit for my nclex in tn once the residency starts.) have you gotten any information on the tn bon requirements (fingerprinting, authorization to test, etc.) as far as the license and testing application process goes? sorry for all the questions, i'm just really excited to get started :yeah:

sunshine-- i was an adn student with a 3.3 gpa (although i do have lots of bachelor's credit from other schools prior to my major change), and i'm finishing up my second year of clinical rotations. we did 1 a week for the 1st 2 qtrs, then 2 days a week for the last 4... our preceptorship is only 56 hours, but we have had a lot of experience already. i never worked as a tech, but have an active nurse aide license. i was a little worried they would look down on me as an adn student, but i think what they really want to see is how committed you are to the field and to as well. i explained to them in detail why i wanted to work there as opposed to somewhere else.... the application is very involved, and of course all interviews are nervewracking, but the process was well worth it, and the people i've met so far were so nice! good luck to you, and if you have any questions about the interview process, look over this thread again (because i asked the members about a million of them while i was applying!) or make a post and i'll try and answer as best i can.

Hi Jones.ah! Congrats to you, as well!! I live in Columbus, near Hilliard. How about you?

I will probably be moving down at the end of June, as that is when my current lease is up. It's crazy to look for places to live in a city I know nothing about!!I graduated in March and just took NCLEX today (yikes!). I haven't looked too much into Tenn BON info yet, because I'm just stressing about whether I passed or not. As soon as I find out, I am going to look into that! I think it will be great and probably a lot easier for you to just take your boards there!

Are you excited to start? I can't wait!! I'm wondering when they're going to send out info packets...hoping it's sooner rather than later : )

congrats guys!
