Vanderbilt University MSN PreSpecialty 2024

Updated:   Published

Hi! I wanted to create a thread for those applying to Vanderbilt University MSN via PreSpecialty Entry! I heard we will hear back before the holiday's if you apply in time for priority review. What speciality did you apply to?

Specializes in Oncology.

Yes, I wasn't accepted for pre specialty. I had my essays and everything checked by my professors and colleagues and also a student that is in the program at vandy so I'm not sure why I was rejected. My grades were average and maybe that's why but Truly heartbroken because this is the only program I wanted and applied for.

I'm sorry to hear that. I heard prespecialty is very competitive. Did you have good letters of recommendation?

Congrats to you both, I didn't get in for nurse midwifery and I'm completely heartbroken. Can I ask what your background and stats are like so I can improve in the future? I have a 3.83 graduate GPA for my previous masters degree. I felt like my essays were really good and I had them heavily reviewed so I just don't know where I went wrong.

I am so sorry ? I wish you the best of luck in whatever you put your mind to in the future! For my stats/background, I hold a 3.97 GPA from my BS in Biochemistry, with minors in Mathematics and Psychology. I had about ~1000 hours as a nurse assistant and about ~400 hours as a volunteer. I have a couple of honor societies and the president of a club at my college. I can't think of much else that would've contributed to my application besides my recommendation letters (2 from professors 1 from an NP) and my essays. I hope this helped & good luck with everything!

Yea, so my GPA was a 3.0 from college but I was under the impression that they would only look at your prereqs grades my lowest were a C in Microbiology. After graduation, I started taking other classes at my community college, only had A&P2 left to complete. I'm a phlebotomist at HCA hospital. I had two supervisors write my letters of recommendation and I had my mentor/shadower that is an OB/GYN write the other one. For my essays, I had a friend that's in the program already and my mentors that graduated pharmacy school read over it.

I think having really strong, well-written essays and letters of recommendation helped me in my case. I had 2 Fs and multiple withdrawals on my transcript but I explained the circumstances in my addendum.  I had 2 of the physicians I work with and a colleague who is an NP write my letters of recommendation. I think they look at more than just your grades and I honestly don't know what my overall GPA is for undergrad since I went to multiple schools and took classes at various colleges. They do a holistic review of your application. In my statement of purpose, I made sure to get the message across that this specific program is for me and why I want to be in this program.

I hope this gives you some insight but I'm also a Direct Entry candidate with 6+ years of oncology nursing experience.

Maybe we can connect and I can send you over my essays just to read over so that way in the near future I can approach it differently. I probably should've explained my withdrawals and re-taking courses to them but I figured my letter of recommendations and essays would have shown that I'm still a good candidate.

Absolutely, I would love to. What's your email/social media accounts?

My heart goes out to all of those who didn't get the news they wanted today. Keep your head up and keep pushing forward. Great things are in store

I got in for duel FNP/CNM! I'll be rejecting my seat because I am attending another program but goodluck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Congratulations on your multiple acceptances! Can I ask where you'll be attending? I was curious which other programs have dual FNP/CNM options.

I believe Vanderbilt has the only FNP/CNM program which is super unique! I will be attending OHSUs PA program in a few months. Vanderbilt was the only NP Program I applied to because the FNP/CNM gives you the flexibility that PAs have (with the added benefit of birth work) but I ended up going with OHSU!
