Hello!
I am graduating in December and I have the summer off so I've begun looking at potential places that I'd like to work.
I'm thinking I'd like to do a nurse residency because I want to work in a pediatric Critical Care setting (PICU or Peds ER) and I feel like having that whole year with someone helping me and that I can ask questions without feeling like an annoying dummy.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here was looking at Vanderbilt's Nurse Residency for February 2018? I'm not from Nashville, but I'm also not too far away as I'm from North Alabama. I'd appreciate any tips about the residency or about Nashville!
Thanks
Is anyone else super nervous about moving? I've never lived alone or with people I don't know. I'm having palpitations thinking about moving out of my home. Everyone keeps saying that if I'm that scared I should just stay here. I think I just need some encouragement, but nobody seems to want me to go except people who know I've been offered a job there and how awesome it is to get into a residency. Like when I'm thinking rationally it's like "why would I want some job that pays less than Vandy and doesn't teach me as much?" But then I get into the "why am I leaving? I'm safe and happy and life is here."
If anyone would like to remind me why I'm doing this to myself, I'd really appreciate the encouragement! I don't even graduate until December and I have an exam tomorrow for a class and all I can think is "why am I trying to move? What's the point? Why am I in nursing school? I can't do anything!" It's frustrating. I haven't had a panic attack in almost two semesters but in the past few weeks I've felt really close to one almost every day.
Sorry, I just really needed to get all that off my chest in an anonymous way as opposed to sharing with the world that I can't handle life.
It's actually really super reassuring that someone else is feeling the same way. I'm also coming from out of state (a state where there is much need for nurses and offers much much more than the base salary at Vamdy) but I get to thinking and realize that its a good thing to be out of your comfort zone -that's where I'm able to learn the most about yourself and you're also getting experience that will put you that much ahead than the next person back home (or so I tell myself). If anything -it's temporary -you can finish out the year and go back home (with resume stating your experience at a level one trauma center and the candy name). Also, what also helps me is knowing that I'll be bringing in some dough and if I want to I can simply hop on a plane and go home for a few days on my days off. Also if that doesn't help maybe this will- I graduated in May and took my NCLEX in July ...were in Oct. ....meaning I haven't been in a hospital setting since six months (if you count NOv which is when I start) and to make t worse I haven't looked over my notes or books or reviewed which means I'm screwed and makes you that much more prepared than I am. P.S. i really like your honesty -it's raw and something that people often hide. I'm right there with ya collegestudent1
Congrats on passing NCLEX! I feel so jittery that I don't even know how I'll make it to NCLEX. lol hopefully I make it in one piece (there's only one testing center in my little area within a 2 hour drive either to the north or south of me).
I believe in you! Just look at the commonly seen issues/diagnoses listed on your track's website on the NRP page and look those up! What track did you get accepted into?
CollegeStudent1, just remind yourself of the reasons why you applied for the residency at Vanderbilt. Like NurseJaneDoe said, if you're not happy in Nashville, you can always move back home after the year is up. You can think of it as an additional year of nursing school, so it's kind of like you're going away to college for a year, but you're getting paid to learn! I think the experience and knowledge you'll gain at Vandy will be invaluable and a great way to start your nursing career!
How many pairs of scrubs do you guys recommend? And what brand and what store do you it's usually out has them from? Oh and the t-shirts with VUMC where can we get them from? I think this may have been discussed before so I apologize for be inconvenience.
I've got 3 pairs of scrubs for my current job (I work PRN so I can work 0-3 times a week depending on my school schedule). I plan to buy some new scrubs but I don't want a closet full. Probably like 4-6 pairs in case one week you're lazy and don't wash your scrubs or you get called in a day or two after your shifts and haven't had the chance to wash them yet. I've bought mine from a store here in Alabama (WE JUST GOT VERA BRADLEY SCRUBS IN!) and I'll probably buy some here before I head up there, but there's a place at Opry Mills Mall that I've looked through before. They're more organized by color than brand whereas here it's more brand than color. I'm thinking VUMC shirts may be available in the gift shop or wherever may be the closest selling scrub place. I've gotten my hospital's apparel from that same shop down here, but I don't know a lot about Nashville or how Vandy sets up their clothing sells. My unit once had a group order for unit specific sweatshirts.
