Vanderbilt Nurse Residency 2014

U.S.A. Tennessee

Yeah, I know... I'm waaaay ahead of time :) But I thought there might be some people planning ahead like me. I'm graduating in December and I thought some others might like to discuss what you are doing to help you get in! I have a 3.7, I'm doing a medical mission to Guatamala in May, attending the NSNA annual convention, and hopefully working at a special needs day camp over the summer. I know I need some volunteer hours, so I'm hoping to fit them in at the end of the summer and during next semester, and praying its enough. Anyone else? [Pediatrics BTW]

I'm applying as well. I'm trying to decide between the Emergency track and the Burn track. I'm afraid that I'm digging myself into a whole by wanting these tracks!

I am applying for the program as well! I graduated in May 2013 and am applying for the pediatric track.

Why digging yourself into a hole?

I am currently filling out the application, and I am super stressed especially after reviewing the credentials of the candidates from the last cycle. Although I have no recent volunteer/ leadership experience, I have been working as a certified home health aide since July 2012 and as a CNA in a hospital since January 2013. I am applying for the critical care track, and those selected last year (for this track) had near perfect GPAs and extensive volunteer/work/leadership experience. I feel like I'm wasting my time, lol. Anywho I'm going to try to finish my application by the end of this week. I know I can't submit until all my references come in, so I'm going to keep an eye on that as well. This program is super competitive. Apparently last cycle - 550 applied, and 220 were interviewed. I have no idea how many were selected. Good Luck everyone!!! I just completed an accelerated program while working, and that was very hard in itself. I couldn't imagine volunteering or doing something else as well. How's everyone else handling the application? I'm from Jersey btw

I'm not feeling so good about it but I'm just going to apply anyways. Extenuating circumstances led to very little volunteer work for me this summer, and I have no experience working in healthcare. But I want it bad, and I'm going to try or I'd hate myself. Good luck guys!

I have applied for the emergency tract. I'm nervous as well because it's been almost impossible to find a job since I had an offer and it got rescinded 2 weeks before i was supposed to start (hiring freeze/budget cuts) :( So my last 6 months have been NCLEX, part time jobs, and looking for a full time nursing position. I hope they consider my past volunteer / work experience rather than just these past 6 months!

Good luck to you all new applicants! I didn't have the "avg GPA" for the program ( mine was a tad lower), and not a ton of volunteer experience nor any previous work as a Tech/CNA, but I was accepted. I really think that the interview is the deciding factor, so prepare, prepare, prepare and again prepare for it! I'm sure you all will do great! And definitely put some hard work into writing any statements of interest in your application packet. Every bit matters. :)

Thanks for sharing jspb. I submitted my application today, let the waiting begin.

I'm applying for Adult Critical Care. My GPA isn't the best so I am really am unsure that I'll get an interview, but if I don't apply than I'll always wonder if I could have got in. I have international volunteer experience from this summer and work experience as an LPN. I am waiting on my advisor to do her part and finishing up my letter of intent. I just hope to get an interview :-)

I did the residency. Everyone is talking about pay lol. I dont know if im allowed to say specifics on how much nurse residents make since this is a public website but i make about the same if not more than my other new grad friends who work at st thomas and centennial. has a nightshift differential and a weekend pay differential. GPA doesnt mean everything I had a 3.3. Its a point based system based on experience: leadership, volunteer, work, GPA and the interview. The highest points get the job. Amazing program for new grads. I feel like I have learned a ton and am more confident in my nursing abilities. Hope this helps and good luck on getting in!

Have you heard anything about LPN's getting any pay increase for their LPN experiencel? I only ask because I know that the VA gives a pay increase for it. It's fine with me if they don't but I'm just curious.

im pretty sure its a standard rate of pay for all nurse residents
