Vanderbilt MSN 2016

Published

I haven't seen a thread yet for 2016 hopefuls, so I thought I'd start one. After much research and changing my mind back and forth, I decided to go for the Vanderbilt MSN. I would be direct entry as I already have my BSN. I finally decided on Pediatric Primary Care. I'm just worried about getting a job after graduation as I'm not really seeing much in the way of openings in the Nashville area--which is where I live.

I am trying to decide between Vandy and UPenn, does anyone have advice?? Anything would be appreciated:)

For anyone trying to decide between programs, check out this thread that someone else started. It's great to hear people's thoughts on various programs, as I'm sure many of us have applied to the same ones!

Does anyone know anything about the full tuition scholarships? I'm looking at VUSN (pre-specialty) and it would be nice to know how many people are considered for those/how many receive one. I understood the information online as only 1 PRE-SPECIALTY student gets a full scholarship (the others looked like they were for 2nd year students or Direct Entry). Any information would be great! :)

Hi, I just checked my notes because I remember they talked about them at the Oct open house.

There are three, given to students with the highest GPA and GRE. One pre-specialty, one direct-entry and I apologize, I missed the last one (there's a ? in my notes). You don't have to apply, they pull the info from applications. If you're #s are high enough you're notified that you're eligible, then you write an essay. Winners are chosen from there. Hope that helps.

Hey where did you find that information?

Thanks so much! I actually ended up calling financial aid after I posted that and was told that this year they're doing away with the essays and will just be choosing people based on their applications? This was news to me from what I've seen people say before.. kind of nerve racking! I'm sure they get many qualified applicants. Did they mention anything at Open House about how competitive it usually is? Is it always awarded to someone with a perfect GPA or is it combined with GRE?? Thanks again! I wish I could have been at Open House and asked myself.

I received the financial aid email but haven't heard about being admitted. I'm in the second round of applicants though. When I called admissions, she said I wouldn't hear a decision until end of February or early March. I haven't filled out the financial aid yet...waiting to hear the decision first. Hope this helps!

I emailed them about it when I received my acceptance letter and was told that they will notify eligible candidates in "3-4 weeks" (this was 11 days ago). Didn't say whether or not there is an essay or what qualifies as "eligible". Would be great to know before I have to decide on a school, because getting a scholarship would pretty much make the decision for me!

sml14, I definitely agree! Kind of a bummer that there's only one full ride for pre-specialty and 3 for 2nd year students (according to their website). The Pre-Specialty year is the most expensive! Do you have any idea on what the typical stats are for the student that receives it? Or how many people are usually considered? I feel like everyone that's been accepted has such a strong background this year.

lanima- From what I remember being said at open house in October, there are several applicants with 4.0 GPA who also have very high GRE scores. I would assume the recipient will have a 4.0 and above average test scores in all areas. It sounded like they first look at the pool of 4.0 GPAs with high test scores and then narrow it down by other criteria.

They told us at the open house in October, but see Ianima's comment below, looks like they did away with the essays.

I don't remember if they said how competitive it is. They did say it was combined GPA & GRE though, not GPA alone. For the first year anyway. 2nd year would be the 4.0s I guess. But who knows what might have changed.

Wow - several applicants with 4.0's! I guess that's how you know it's a good program!
