Specializes in Everything!.

I applied for a nursing position at the local VA hospital last year. I was interviewed last month. So far, I have finished my VetPro, physical, and fingerpriting. I'm told that I might be "boarded" tomorrow. How long after that will I hear anything?? Do you think I could start working anytime soon? (Like June?)

Thanks a head of time for your input.

You should here something soon. In total it takes about 60 days to complete the whole process and it looks like you have done most of it. I would call HR and find out when the next new employee orientation is explaining that you want to give your present employer proper notification.

The nursing boards meet on Tuesdays, so if your packet is complete on a Wednesday it will go the following Tuesday. It takes about 2 weeks to come back from the Board and get scanned to HR. The last step of the process is being called by HR with a start date, and that none if the porcessing has expired (ie: physical, background check have to be within the past 3 months otherwise they will redo them).

The VAs are under a "soft" hiring freeze. They are hiring into critical shortage areas. Depending on what area you hired onto your packet may be complete, signed off, but "wait" in HR until the freeze lifts. I just went thru this whole process, 7 months, and just got my start date of 5/26.

Call recruitment to find out where your packet is and if your dept is under a freeze. Good luck to you....... I'd contact your Manager too. My Manager was great thru the whole process...

The entire hiring process usually take 4-5 months from start to finish.

Ok so I applied in March. I got my interview in June. I was offered the job 2 weeks later. I still need to turn in the rest of my hiring packet. My nurse manager said it could take 1 month from the date they receive all documents for the paper work to process which coud take a month or so. I am not quite sure what else I need to do. I heard a background check or expect before I get a start date issued to me.

Well if you have been offered the job and have turned in all of the application paperwork, your package needs to go to the Board. When approved, and salary offered, HR will then be calling you to set up a Physical thru Occupational Health and then you'll be fingerprinted. Call the Vet Pro from Recruitment to find out how far along your package is....... Keep in contact with your Manager too
