I was curious if anyone had any details about the VA's HBPC program. How many patients do you see per day? Do you have a company vehicle or use your own vehicle? How are patients selected for HBPC? There is a job opening in my area and I am considering applying for this position.
Any info is appreciated!

I actually got a call back 2 days ago for my references, but as it turns out my husband received an unexpected job offer in another city so I decided to withdraw my name for the position. It looks as if we may be making a move this fall, and to be honest I have had some reservations about the job since the interview and didn't feel like it was the right path for me. I am still curious to see how things turn out for you so please keep us posted!!
Update: I have been working in Home Based Primary Care as an NP for 8 months now. Hands down the best job in my life as well as for the RNs that work in HBPC.
I have a panel of geriatric pts that I see quarterly and PRN, I have a VA car. currently I have 62 pts in my panel and can take up to 90. Our program is growing. I see pts in their homes and assisted living facilities, no nursing homes. I can't tell you enough how much I love this job. My veterans are so dear to me.

Hi Shara.
I still work at the VA but not in Home Based Primary Care. I absolutely love the job. It was the best decision I made early on in my NP career. Meaning, I passed up jobs with higher paying offers and took the VA offer back in 2014. My pay increases over time have balanced out to what other NPs are making with similar work experience and education level, however my benefits far exceed the benefits other NPs have. Additionally, the work-life balance and personal and professional development that I have access to within the VA system is unmatched. I hope I answered your question.

I feel ya, I am working on the "Advance Practice Nurse Dimensions of nursing" This is due next Wed and then it goes before the nurse professional board to determine what my level is Nurse I, II, II and salary. They have sent me emails asking if I need to give a 2 week notice or 1 month (1 month) for sure. I sent the HBPC PA a message today asking if I could stop my the clinic next week (I am off work) and visit with him. Waiting on a reply. I live in the same town that the clinic is in. If you do decide to proceed with this. PM me and we will keep in touch and I will relay my experience to you (if I take the job). SW
