VA called my references what's next?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello y'all,

I was interviewed at Veterans Affairs around 4 weeks ago, yesterday they called my references asking about me and they asked them for their mailing address because their going to send them a questionnaire.

I'm wondering what that means? Because I know that they are not going to invest time and money, calling my references if they are not interested in hire me.

Please can you share your experience with VA hiring process?

What's next after they call your references ?

Thanks and have a great day!

The VA moves really slow it’s in HR’s hands now.  It was about a month and a half between when the check my references and I got my tentative offer letter and the another 2 weeks before I got the actual money offer.  It too almost 3 months total from the time I interviewed till I got my official offer so just keep being patient

Thanks so much!! Yeah, it's kinda made me nervous because everything has been speedy until now. I know there are other applicants and 2 openings, but it's usually a good sign when they call you back saying there were pleased and impressed with your interview and then try so hard to get your references contact numbers and contact them like the next day But nothing is set in stone yet, I guess LOL

Yeah nothing set in stone until you get the initial job offer then you have some paper work to do.  Boards meet once a week and review the resumes depend on years as a nurse degree level and job experience they make a money offer once you get the money offer you can give your current job notice.  It’s a process to get on with the VA but it’s worth it.

Oh I didn't know that. I got a text from my supervisor a week ago that said they called and that she gave me an excellent reference but nothing yet (like I said it's just been a week). Although I recall during the interview one of the panel members said they only contact references of people they're interested in. In your personal opinion where would you think my application is currently?

It’s hard to says but I do know they references are called only on the nurses they are interested in.  I have sat on interview panels several times and been the one to call references and we did not hire all of the ones we called references on but that was usually only because of a less than glowing reference.  Don’t be afraid to reach out to HR and ask about the status of application.  You should hear one way or the other though.

Well, I just emailed following up on the status and/or if there was additional information that I needed to provide. I mentioned I'm still very interested in the position and sent it. LOL let's hope my "excellent reference" paid off

Josh, as a reminder, it’s not a good idea to have your real name and photo here. You never know who might access it or for what reason.  Go to your profile and change them both stat, or ask the admins to help you.
Good luck on the job!

I’m sorry but don’t give up I applied for 4 positions at the VA before I got on more than likely there was a transfer from a different department and they also give veterans preference as well.

Hello, to everyone wondering if I got the job, the answer is YES. It’s a long process.
