UW Proctored Essay....

I think it's a safe bet that whatever you are going to be asked to write about will be something you will know. What they are probably looking for is that you use good spelling and grammar, that your essay shows some semblance of being organized and that your paragraphs are structured. Most likely, they do this because they want to see if you can really write. It's too easy for applicants to cheat and have someone else write or review the grammar on their essays that accompany their applications. Also, if you are in an area where there are a lot of foreigners they are also checking to see if you have a command of the English language.

The only preparation for this would be to remember to make a little plan before you start writing your essay. Make a little outline off to the side of the paper listing the thoughts or ideas you want to put into each paragraph of the essay. Have a beginning paragraph that sort of gives a glimmer of what you are going to say in the remainder of the essay. Have a final paragraph that summarizes what you said in the essay and give a final conclusion. Make sure your sentences are concise and verb tense agrees. Don't use words that you don't know how to spell or you may think you've spelled wrong.

hey there I actually took this essay a while back and got into UW, so hopefully I did something right. The questions change every year of course, but from my experience and what I heard from students 1 and 2 years before me, many times the questions will touch on leadership or ethics. Not a textbook question on those per se, but how did you demonstrate that in some situation.

Thanks for all the input!

Since the essay is only an hour, I am stressed about having enough time to put the essay together and complete it...Plus I had hand surgery last October and my hand writing still hasn't gone back to normal, I have all my motor skills back but for what ever reason my writing isn't as neat as it was...Anyway I am just a big ball of stress until I get this done. Thank you again for your advice!

What was the question on your essay and how do you think you did? I have an essay coming up and I'm looking for ways to prepare. Going in cold seems like a very bad idea.
