UW Oshkosh Online Accelerated Program - May 2011

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Published

Thought I might start a post to communicate between those of us who have applied for the May 2011 Cohort. Feel free to join in and let everyone know if you have heard anything. I would imagine we will not hear much until December as we get closer to grades for the fall classes.

If you are lurking from a prior cohort, we (ok at least I) would love to hear your experiences (both good and bad) and how you might have approached things differently.

Best of luck to everyone!

Kimberly

Hello fruitycandy...

Welcome to the board and yes it is never to late to join. It is very exciting to hear about all that you have done up to this point. I can certainly understand you wanting a "portable" career and I think nursing is an excellent choice. Yes we are all trying to be patient while we wait for a late Christmas letter from Oshkosh, WI. I think the holidays will go fast (at least for me)...it will be the cold long January that will drag, but we can keep each other company. If I may ask, where are you guys currently stationed? Do you plan to be stateside for a few years?

As for my background, I hold a BS in Accounting. I have had a strong desire to join the medical field since I left college, but I guess I was never courageous enough to chase that dream. My family and I relocated a few years back and while searching for a new accounting job I found the courage to make the leap. I give so much credit to my husband for his encourage and gentle nudges (sometime shoves) off the ledges. This is also my first time applying.

Here's to a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all (and something extra in all of our stockings).

Kimberly

Thanks for the welcome.

My husband is currently stationed at Luke AFB in Phoenix, AZ. We have been here for 2 years and we will be here for 1.5 more years. He will be required to switch duty stations in June 2012. We don't know where we'll be sent, but there are a limited number of locations he can be stationed and unfortunately most are overseas. (unfortunate only in the sense that a nursing education is very difficult to obtain overseas!)

If I am not accepted into this cohort, I will probably apply to the Oct cohort, but I don't know if I'll be able to accept a position. My husband will definitely have to move in summer 2012, and if he goes I suppose I can stay in Phoenix and finish school and join him later, but it would be difficult indeed. Did I mention I have three children age 4 and under? :hrnsmlys: This is only working right now because there are two of us! If I was on my own.....ugh, I shudder to think!

If I am lucky enough that our next duty station is stateside and in a state that participates with the UW program, I can apply again for May 2012, but the chances are slim that we'll be stateside--I am fully expecting to be sent to Korea for 2 years after this duty station, so this is kind of my one and only shot at nursing for a good long time. I'll be heartbroken to not be accepted because my career could be stagnant/nonexistent for 3+ years before I can get another chance.

If I am not accepted into the UW program this cohort, I am considering applying to a 2nd degree BSN program at a local university here. I wouldn't be finished with it before my husband leaves in summer 2012, but if I am not accepted into this cohort, it's going to be the same situation if I do the Oct UW cohort. Either way, if I am not accepted into this cohort, I am ultimately going to have to choose between living with my husband or going to nursing school or just putting nursing school off or several years until I don't have to choose anymore.

So yeah, I am not your typical "oh well, if I don't get into this cohort, I'll just apply to the next one" type person. It's been pretty consuming--hoping for a spot! Whatever happens, I'll be able to deal with it. I do realize that my chances of acceptance may be low due to no CNA experience, (however, I am an EMT and I have been volunteering as such in a local hospital ER for 7 months now--so I am hoping that helps!)

Oh also, I plan to use my husband's transferrable GI Bill benefits to pay for the astronomical cost of this program. If I am accepted into the May cohort, GI Bill will cover the tuition completely. If I have to wait until a later cohort, I'll only get about half of it paid for, due to recent changes to GI Bill legislation. Which is another reason I'll probably consider a different (cheaper!) program if I don't get into this cohort.

Happy Holidays!:christmastree:

Happy New Year Everyone!!!! Welcome to 2011. Three days down and no more than 28 until we hear. I hope all of you have lots to do this January to keep you busy and occupied until we hear. If anyone is lacking something to do I have a house to clean and organize. I just hauled over about 1500 sq ft of carpet out of my neighbor's basement to "carpet" our basement so I am pooped out for tonight.

Keep us all updated on anything you might hear. Have a great week.
