UW-Oshkosh Accelerated BSN - May 2015 Cohort

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Published

Greetings!

I've started the application process for the May 2015 cohort, with the September 15, 2014 deadline in mind. I've completed the academic prerequisites, with the exception of Biochemistry; and I'm enrolled in that for this fall semester. Luckily, I scored well enough on the TEAS V that I won't need to take an advanced composition class. I live in Milwaukee and I've been taking prerequisites at Milwaukee Area Technical College. I haven't yet started my CNA training and I hope to have that completed in October or November.

Once I decided to leave full-time employment to concentrate on prerequisites, I started doing very well and am thoroughly enjoying my classes. UW-Oshkosh uses prerequisite grades to determine GPA, so I should be competitive in that regard. My TEAS V scores were quite high, so I should be in good shape there, as well. My definitive weakness will be my lack of CNA experience. Past UW-Oshkosh ABSN threads show the lack of CNA experience trips up many applicants.

Is anyone else thinking of applying?

I'm applying for May 2016 cohort. Hoping to get my CNA training next month--it's been tough to schedule since i'm a SAHM and primary daytime caregiver for my boys. Sitting in the training all day is hard. But we'll make it work-somehow. This is the last requirement (other than taking the TEAS V this summer) that I have to complete. How about you? Did you apply this year? Have you worked as a CNA long?

I'll be applying for May 2016 as well. I'm hoping to start CNA training next month with completion by the end of the program. Luckily the program I'm looking at has an online classroom component with labs and clinicals in person so it affords a little more flexibility since I'm working full-time. Once certificated I'll work part-time. I'll have applied by then so I'll have no experience at the time of application and minimal experience my the start of the program so I'm a little worried but worse case scenario I can apply for the Oct 2016 cohort and start then hopefully. I'll be taking the TEAS V next month. I didn't apply this year.

maybe we'll be in the same cohort then! :) how long is your CNA training? the state i'm in (PA) doesn't allow you to take the classroom portion online--i so wish it did! but i guess the benefit of doing it the way i am is that i'll be done in one month and able to work. super condensed but then done. hopefully others can give us an idea of the average amount of CNA experience accepted applicants have.

For sure! My CNA program is 10 weeks I believe. The online piece is 51 hrs self-paced, although it has to be completed within 4 months of registering for the program. 5 weekends of labs and then 5 weekend of clinical. So this is all online and weekend. I'm in OR by the way.

I am also curious about the amount of CNA experience. I am going to apply to the May 2016 cohort like a few of you. I will have my CNA at the end of June. I have a part-time job lined up with a Home Health Care Agency, but I probably won't get started until August. Also, I will be a CNA Birth Assistant to a local midwife. I will be observing births in August and then attending births starting in October. So, I am not sure any of that will help me out much.

I was a volunteer nurse assistant 23 years ago in which I did get quite a bit of experience. I am also a La Leche League Leader (breastfeeding counselor) in which I do in person helping sessions. I am not sure if either of those will help me out.

If I were you I wouldn't be worried aje122799. It sounds like you'll have plenty of experience!

Has anyone taken the TEAS V and if so, how did you do?

I am wondering if any of the May 2015 cohort can give me an idea of what the schedule is like. For example what are the dates for the orientation, boot camp and final week. Thanks!

If any of you May Cohort people feel like giving some advice to an October Cohort person please feel free ;) I am so exciting to be starting in a few months!

Hi!

I'm happy to see this thread!

I am also in the process of applying for the May 2015 cohort and want to use my WI GI Bill.

I am taking the TEAS this week and am freaking out a bit. Any suggestions about TEAS test-taking skills would be great. I'm feeling intimidated by the way the test questions are written, I think.

I have been working on my re-reqs and got a CNA job recently. Even though I was running a health care organization, they said if it wasn't the "CNA" title, it wouldn't count. Harsh.

One thing I noticed that seems to be taken off of the May 2015 application was referral letters. I have combed the website and the application several times, and I can't see anything about it; however, I know it was a requirement previously. Does anyone have any input on that?

My TEAS test is the last big thing I have to do before I complete my application. I'm glad to hear from others doing this right now. Good luck to everyone!

Rebecca

I emailed to confirm recommendation letters were not needed for the May 2016 app. They have removed the requirement.

I tried to double "like" this. :) Makes it a *bit* easier on us applicants. Thanks for checking with them aje!

Welcome Rebecca!!

There are a many good recommendations above for the TEAS. Math, look up Keshwani Prep on YouTube. He goes thru the entire ATI manual problem by problem. Like having a personal ATI tutor. For the other sections, just study the manual and look up any additional sections that you feel a bit weak in. Pay the money for the ATI online practice exam, that's the most like the real exam. You'll do fine, no worries!! :) Good luck!
