Hi! I'm applying for the UW BSN for next fall. This is my second time applying to the program and I really want to get in! I thought I would start a discussion so we can all help each other out since the application comes out this month and the essay questions are already out!
A little about myself:
-When I applied for this fall my nursing prerequisite gpa was a 3.0 and I retook one class and I believe now it is a 3.2 which isn't that great but they accept anywhere from a 2.4-4.0 for this fall so I am not too worried about that.
-When I applied for this fall I only had 120 healthcare experience hours and when I apply for next year I'll have well over 1,500.
-I'm also doing a study abroad program in maternal and child health in December before the app is due and this year i managed to get a job at Mary Bridge Children's hospital and recently got hired at Seattle Children's. I also got certified in neonatal resuscitation.
Thanks all! I can't wait to hear back and get some advice!
Greetings all,
My name is Carolyn Chow, Director of Admissions and Student Diversity at the University of Washington School of Nursing.
I have become aware of the thread related to the 2018 BSN cohort size and wanted to take this opportunity to offer some additional information and open the door for questions or clarification.
Thank you all for your interest in UW and our programs. Regarding this year's undergraduate offers of admission, I understand the frustration many of you are feeling about the enrollment limit and waitlist. I am writing to answer some questions that have been raised in this discussion.
1.Starting in Autumn 2019, undergraduate students enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) programs at the UW School of Nursing Seattle campus will have a new curriculum that adds additional opportunities for ambulatory care, population health content and clinical experiences and research. You can learn more about the new curriculum on our website: New undergraduate curriculum | School of Nursing
2.Overlap between the current and the new curriculums has necessitated a temporary adjustment in the undergraduate cohort sizes in 2018 to avoid overloading our clinical partners, sites and faculty with too many students. The number of BSN students enrolled will temporarily decrease, while the number of ABSN students enrolled will temporarily increase.
3.Notifications for BSN admissions went out later this year than in previous years because our faculty and clinical partners were working to identify ways to admit as many students as possible. I understand that this is still disappointing news for those of you who are on the waitlist or who did not receive an offer of admission.
4.This year's BSN applicant pool was highly competitive and as with each year, we could not offer admission to as many students as were qualified.
I hope this new information helps provide additional context for the longer than usual waitlist. I invite you to speak with me if you have further questions or concerns. You can reach me and our admissions staff at [email protected].
In my opinion, it's more about treating us equally in relation to other years rather than us looking for special treatment. Why would it be okay for them to cut 32 qualified and competitive applicants' spots without any sort of forewarning? Over miscommunication, potentially 32 of us will have to wait another year, and that is not okay.

This is very well said. We do need to be treated equally. I understand changes to curriculum are occurring but the 32 people who would have made it are penalized. If the admission to next year is going back up to 96 then take the people on the waitlist and admit them automatically. This would be a fair compensation.
When I first read that I was waitlisted I tried to stay optimistic knowing that I tried my best and worked hard to be a competitive applicant. But, after finding out that the SoN only admitted 64 students instead of their usual 96 during the year I applied was just a bad feeling... Although the applicant pool was competitive, I still was competitive enough to make the top 96, but not the top 64. But any other year it would have been enough.

I admit that I phrased it badly when I said "special treatment." What I was trying to get across was that they most likely would not admit us this year or admit us next year automatically, as unfortunate and frustrating as that is. I completely get it. I was waitlisted as well, and I just lost my four year scholarship. I want nothing more than for them to change their minds or for them to treat us as part of the 96 that should have been part of the Fall 2018 cohort.

I would check out their contact us page:

I've been using the asknursing.uw.edu for asking general questions. They're pretty good with responding quickly. The fastest would be just to drop by the health sciences building and talk to someone there. They are all pretty welcoming there. I don't see why they wouldn't want to hear you out. Not really sure how well the phone number works out as I've never had to call them before.
I seriously doubt they'll change their minds and offer special treatment for us but it could help improve the way they handle things in the future because (as everyone has been writing) it is completely unfair and way too last minute to be cutting 32 spots and just placing those folks on the waitlist.
