UVA CNL Program 2016

Hello, All!

I figured I would start a new thread for people applying to the UVA CNL Program for 2016. I have to admit I'm pretty nervous about applying, and I really hope it all works out. I'm graduating from Virginia Tech this May with a degree in Psychology. I haven't completed all of my pre-reqs yet, but my gpa is decent, and I'm a nationally certified EMT. I'm nearly done with my application, but a little nervous that my references won't submit their letters in time :/ let me know how your process is going!

My interview last year was October 23rd and was scheduled the week before so it's most definitely in that window mentioned. Thanks for verifying, Cowboy 21277.

Anybody have any updates? My application still says "Submitted" because it took some time for me to get my final transcript in. Anybody else's say anything different?

I didn't get my interview until late November. Talk about nerve-wracking. I remember being in your shoes. Just stay positive!!! Good luck everyone and I am excited to see all the good news posted once you get in :) I am a 2015 graduate so let me know if you have any questions!!!

No updates from this end either. Hopefully waiting.

I'm going to start sketching some talking points for the interview, just in case. A lot of the questions will draw on your work experiences, handling certain scenarios, etc. A tip for you guys, take some time to think about the following:

-Why you want UVa's CNL program

-Why nursing

-Your strengths/weaknesses

-Your leadership style, experiences, etc. (Hence Clinical Nurse LEADER)

Remember, they already have your essays and resume. Think about your answers providing additional information, additional things you want them to know, etc. Additionally, think of any questions you may have for your interviewer.

Also, be mentally prepared for a phone interview (in general). This threw me off last year and this goes for all phone interviews. The interviewer will ask a question, then wait for a response. You basically have a one-way conversation and get little/no feedback (as your interviewer is busy taking notes). You get to talk for as long as you want and the interviewer will interpret your stopping as the end of your answer. Usually, there are no follow-on questions from the interviewer (regarding the same topic) nor questions for clarification. So this can be unnerving for those us are not talkers” and heavily use 2-way feedback. A little prepwork will help you stay on track and make sure you talk about everything you need to because you basically get one shot to answer the question. You wont get a nod of approval or anything, just a little silence with an Okay…” that leads to the next question. At the end, you may get an opportunity to add anything additional to your previous answers” but I was so frazzled by this point I couldn't remember the questions, much less my answers! Many companies are using these along with video chats or prerecording your answers, eesh! They can be awful if you've never done one before but I've been told that with prep work and practice you have a better chance at handling them well. Good luck!

Congrats, grad! I was just curious in what capacity you found a job after the program and if you have seen the CNL designation used in Virginia? The hospital where I currently work has no one with that designation, I just wondered if it was starting to be used here. Thanks!

If you plan to work at UVA they start the interviewing process in Feb of the year you graduate. You are pretty much guaranteed a job if you stay at UVA. There is only one person working as a CNL at UVA Medical Center and its not even exactly called that from what I hear. I will say the unit I work on my managers boss is a CNL!~ So lots of potential to move up. I just applied to the Acute Care NP program and I am sitting here anxious with you all but for a different program. :)

I haven't heard anything either It makes me wonder if they're behind schedule, or if it's just that the applicants who got early interview slots aren't on this forum...

My application is showing submitted, but no updates or email as of yet. I hope we hear something soon. This is going to be a tough couple of months, but I am glad we have this forum to communicate in the mean time. I am just trying to plan for any possible questions for the interview and be positive.
