Hi,

Is there anyone else out there who applied/ is currently applying to the UVa direct entry MSN CNL program? I would love to find other members so that we can go through this process together. I'm excited to hear from other applicants! Good luck!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you're all loving the CNL program at UVA, I've been following this thread for a while now and you've all been super informative.

I'm in the midst of doing my science pre-req's and will be ready to apply next fall for the CNL program. My main concern is that I'll apply as an out of state student and am worried this will work against me.

Hopefully working to my advantage - I work on the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital near my home, intern weekly at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (I live in NY) on the Gastro-Intestinal cancer floor and have A's in my pre reqs thus far. My BFA is from Syracuse University. Aside from great grades and extra carricular activities is there ANYTHING i can do to improve my likelihood of an interview/acceptance?

I've been an admirer of UVA for years, my friends who attended for other degrees and to play lacrosse (im also a huge college lacrosse fan) are so proud and happy with their time at the school, and I know its unwise to get my heart set on a single program but I cant help it!!! If there is any advice you guys have i would SO, SO appreciate it!!!

Thank you!

Heidi

Heidi,

Sounds like you have a good package: extra curriculars, hospital experience, grades. I know they also look at GRE scores. As far as being out of state... I'm a 2010 grad and we a several out-of-staters... I don't think that will play a factor at all. The assistant dean of the nursing school watches these message boards. Hopefully he'll chime in if I am incorrect.

Good Luck!

Kathleen

Hi Heidi,

I'm a first year in the program, and although this is the most difficult and work-heavy experience I've ever had, it is also the most rewarding. I truly value the one-on-one clinical experiences, and I feel it's a huge advantage over most other programs. The pacing is very rigorous and sometimes it gets overwhelming with the sheer amount of work that is assigned, but everyone who sticks with it gets through it, everyone is so supportive. It sounds like you are doing everything right, and I believe already having years of experience in the hospital, observing RNs is a great asset. If you can convey why being an RN is the perfect fit for you and what about the UVA CNL program you believe will help you attain those goals, then it will help you in clarifying your goals in your essay/interview. Are you currently a CNA?

I believe our class is over 30% out of state but as long as they know that you would be happy to move to Charlottesville, that will help. Also, if you haven't taken the GRE's (I didn't), you only need to take them if your cumulative GPA is under 3.25.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Hello all!

I have applied to the CNL Program for May 2012, and excited about starting the program. Just a question for you guys that are either in the program or have graduated from it, how many made up your cohorts?

Thanks

Hi Meg and KatMarie,

Thank you so much for your reply - its VERY comforting to know that a significant amount of out-of-stater's are in the program!

I am currently a CNA on the Intensive Care Unit and Surgical Step-down Unit (we care for mainly neuro and gastro post-op patients on stepdown) at Huntington Hospital (on Long Island, NY). I LOVE it and feel very at home in the critical care atmosphere.

I will need to take the GRE because my GPA from 'Cuse is just under 3.25, does that hinder my chances? Moving to Charlottesville - would be amazing. I'm still in my 20's and am looking to make a permanent change. Although I love NY, I see my future elsewhere.

Thank you so so so much for your feedback I'm sure I'll have more questions. I am trying to arrange a time when I can attend an info session for the program, does anyone know if they run these sessions while the school is on winter break or in Spring as well? I can't attend the Oct/Nov sessions as I'll be running around the ICU on those sessions dates!

Thank you again!

Heidi

mlh,

My cohort has 28 in it, although we lost 2 in the summer. Also, I think there were 3 who previously were waitlisted but got in due to early declines to admission.

Heid,

I don't know if there are particular GPA cut-offs, I do know that they look at all the factors that contribute to that applicant, so surely having a strong GRE will only help.

Also the information sessions will begin in the spring semester, so look on the UVA nursing website as the time gets closer.

Hi,

Got ya private message. I'll be glad to share that with you, but I am fairly new to this site, thus don't have the privileges to private msg you. PM me again with ya email and we can go from there. I see you are online, if you have a yahoo, skype or facetime account we can talk on there.

Thanks!

While most of the students enrolled in the CNL program are in-state students, about one-third are from elsewhere (including several from California and other states where nursing enrollments have been impacted by budget cuts). The out-of-state tuition at UVa this year is approximately $25,000 for the academic year (about half the cost of some of the well-known private nursing schools). In-state tuition is about $15,000/year.

Meg is correct that the admissions committee considers many factors (undergraduate GPA, grades received in the prerequisite classes, prior healthcare experience, professional experiences, quality of writing in essays, recommendations, etc). There is a very holistic and thorough review. We do not require the NET, HESI, or other standardized nursing tests.

Applicants with cumulative GPAs under 3.25 from their undergraduate degree need to take the GRE. It is optional for all other applicants.
