UTHSCSA Spring 2016

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I'm considering going to nursing school through the Baptist Health System in San Antonio or UTHSCSA. Most people I get advice from tell me hands down to go for UTHSCSA. I would like to hear from more of you who are currently enrolled or have gone through the nursing school program at either one of these locations in San Antonio. What did you like about the teachers, faculty, the content you were learning, etc. What were your hours like at school and if you had kids, how did you manage your time.

I am still a pre-nursing student and have one more semester in Spring of 2014 to complete before I can apply. I am very excited and just want to know more information. Also, a close family friend is attending nursing school at Wayland Baptist and informed me that their nursing program is shutting down. Is there any truth to this?

Me too! I know I'm cutting it close but I submitted my NursingCas application (Deadline Aug 1) to start in Spring 2016. I'm planning to CRAM for my TEAS and take it by the middle of this month. I'm so excited to start already! If I don't do well on the TEAS, I'll reapply in the spring (Feb 1) to start in the Fall instead. My GPA for science courses is a 3.5 and 3.6 for cumulative which I think is ok.

Also, a little FYI, WAYLAND BAPTIST did CLOSE their nursing program! I spoke with an advisor this week who informed me they removed Wayland Baptist Nursing Program from their system options because their program closed due to poor NCLEX pass rates. It was about 60%. The Baptist Health System School of Health Professions Nursing Program is still open but they only have the ADN program not the BSN. It's frustrating and not my first choice but I'm also applying to their program in case UTHSCSA doesn't accept me.

I haven't submitted my application yet, maybe next week. I am freaking out over it and want it to be perfect lol! Good luck to all of us on our upcoming TEAS V. I hope we all do great. I'm only applying to HSC so I really need to rock it...

Has anyone been to the information sessions? I wonder if I need to do another Hep B series. I had all my shots done as a child/teeen aside from the Tdap.

I went but it was a while back. If you've had you're shots before, just show proof with previous shot records. Or, if you're unable to obtain those, your doctor can order a test that looks for antibodies. If you have them, then you can show your results as proof of vaccination. However, I don't know how much that would cost vs just getting vaccinated again plus the time waiting for results. Might be easier to go ahead and get your hepatitis shot because I heard that can take up to six months.

FYI: Just some information to pass on about vaccinations. Call the University Health System at 210-358-8255 for all the vaccines required for nursing school. They can schedule you an appointment really quick, within a couple of days. They charge $22 per vaccine and $14 for the TB test which takes about two days to complete. That's a pretty good price and is the cheapest around San Antonio. I tried talking to my doctors office about it but they don't always offer all the shots and it depends on their availability if it's in stock, you also have to call your insurance to see if it covers, plus it could be more expensive if you do end up paying out of pocket. Doctors offices usually charge much more for vaccines.

This thread hasn't had any new posts in awhile. How is everybody doing with applications and the Teas exam and all that other fun stuff?

I've registered to take the TEAS on July 27th this month. Hope I do well for it; I haven't studied for it as much as I'd like to.

I spent the entire day before the test reading the ATI book and taking all the practice tests (the ones in the book and the 2 you can buy online). I even stayed up all night reading the study book.

Managed to make an 86.7!

I think you'll do just fine :)

I've submitted my application, transcripts and taken the teas. I'm just waiting for my transcripts to be verified. It's been almost 5 weeks now. Is anyone else waiting to hear from nursingcas?

You know what, I had a huge issue with NursingCas when applying. I submitted everything back in May, 4 weeks passed and my transcripts still weren't showing up as arrived. I sent another one by express mail and it finally showed up but it's been sitting at verifying for quite awhile now

NursingCas is a PAIN! I submitted my application on May 22nd and sent transcripts withing that week and they still haven't completely verified. I've called, and emailed them several times. Nothing. What is the point of paying $45 bucks to wait this long? I submitted an application to Baptist School of Health Professions a week after my NursingCas application, and they already approved and verified. They are only awaiting my TEAS score. I HATE NursingCas. Why does UTHSCSA use it?
