UTHSCSA-Fall 2011

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi All,

Since January 10th was the application deadline, do any of you have an idea as to when the earliest when we will hear from UTHSC-San Antonio? I already have my bachelor's degree in a non-nursing subject but I opted for the 2-year traditional route because the accelerated program just seemed too intense. Are there other 2nd degree folks out there applying to the 2 year program as well? Good luck to you all! I hope we are all there in the Fall!

Yes, baptist offers externships but they do not have it posted on their website. A fellow classmate applied for cna position and was asked if they would be interested in applying for their RN student externship.

Thanks Friendlysmile for the externship info.

Regarding Grad052011: Wow, that's interesting information, thanks for sharing the other side of the coin.

When you say the teachers are nice but then you are accused of lying or cheating, what does that mean? Who is doing the accusing?

Do you feel like the exams and labs have prepared you well for the NCLEX and the working world? Do you have a job lined up?

Do you feel like the assignments and workload are relevant to what you need to know?

Thanks.

Friendlysmile: What do you think of UTHSCSA052011grad's Comments? Do you agree? What would you change about UTHSCSA Nursing program? What would you keep the same?

Specializes in ICU.

Well, I guess i can give my 2 cents here also. I graduated in 2010..

1. I dont think the school was poorly operated... So i dont know that that person is referring to.

2. I agree with the curriculum always changing but apparently its for the better... I mean really EVERYONE at other schools also feel unprepared for their first time working.... I dont think any schools really prepare you for the real world work....

3. I was a peer advisor.... I dont know who you are referring to but the dean + teachers always had there doors open when you needed to talk....

4. Charges? Im not sure of that so im not going to say anything many things have apparently changed since ive graduated... computers?? what.... Also the gym fee is actually to the super nice gym which i enjoyed.

5. Liars and cheaters..... there are always going to be those... our class got accused of it also.... its people passing information about tests around.... people remembering questions on tests and telling it to friends... its really inevitable...

6. True with the pinning ceremony/graduation. We ourselves started our own fundraisers. Sold shirts, had bake sales, etc to raise the money.....

7. Mental health was a blast for me.... but i went to a nice facility.....

All in all, my experience at school was enjoyable. I met great people.... our class was awesome, we fund raised and every semester had a class party..... I guess its just how our class goes that determines the experience....

I don't think any school prepares you enough for the nclex. And also... I had 2 jobs lined up before school ended.... Both in the houston medical center... I must say I had like 6 interviews and turned down like 2 more.....

But mostly interviews are not about which school you went too. A LOT of it is about the grades you make and your personality....

Oh I forgot to mention it but another friend told me about methodist really hire RN students as pca's. She has several interviews already.

Well from my experience, I like most of the teachers and deans. I've had some issue with 1 staff/teacher member but everything sorted out. if you would like to hear about it, just send me a private message and I will tell you. These teachers/deans help you out. They listen to you and want you to pass the classes.

I feel that UTHSCSA is a very good school. I feel that they are giving us the best possible experience that they can provide through clinical settings. I loved Psych (mental) it was one of my favorites.

Yes, they changed the program (i'm in the class where we are the lab rats for this new program). Our class comments have helped shaped this current 1st semester class and eventually your class coming in. I think they are giving us a good education but because everything is new it still has some kinks in there.

Computers/fees....It's new for your class. Everyone now has to get a computer and pay for your spot in the nursing program. It seems that a lot of students decide to drop out at the last minute and then the staff have to come up with alternatives=more work.

Liars/cheaters-i've heard this rumor for our class too. some people are just not honest and it reflexs badly on the rest of us. :(

We were informed from the start that if we wanted to have a pinning ceremony that we would have to raise funds as a class in order to get this ceremony. So when you're class comes in they will elect officers and they should help raise funds for your class. :)

Has anyone been able to register for classes yet or are most of you still waiting for background check hold to be cleared?

Computer requirement:

So I know that many of us are really excited to start the nursing program [woo!] and I know that the school has sent us a letter about the computer requirement, but personally, it just sounds so unnecessary when many students already own a functional laptop or two. Would anyone here be interested in starting a petition on giving us the option to use our own laptops and BUY the program instead of new laptop? [unnecessarily around 1000 dollars]

Sure, some students could use a new laptop, but I feel it is unfair to ask every student to purchase a new and expensive laptop, especially given how tight our finances can be as students. It's also not very green.....

If anyone is interested/knows who to speak about this, please contact me!

Thank you!

Yuki: I am in TOTAL and COMPLETE agreement with you about the laptops!!!

I would not know where to start with the petition or other effective strategies on how to change this requirement. I do not live in San Antonio yet, but I will help!

Yuki,

We have started a facebook group called uthscsa nursing may 2013. Some of us have briefly talked about the computers. Most students are freaking out because of the price. I believe they are making the computers mandatory because they get something from these companies by doing so. Just like with publishing companies and teachers constantly changing the edition of the book needed for class. Anyways if you go in to that page you might be able to reach more people.

Dorotheader and Seriena,

I'm going to join that facebook page and if you guys would like..please comment and put in ideas?

Thank you!

Anybody have a recommendation of a clinic/pharmacy that offers TB testing in the San Antonio area? I currently don't have insurance so I will be paying out of pocket.

Thanks!

penter,

Just go down to the san antonio metropolitan health district location. Its located downtown but they have other locations. I get all my immunizations there. They dont do TB tests on thursdays. Its 30.00. Here is the web site...
