I have seen many threads for previous applicants for past semesters to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I wanted to start one myself as I am applying for the spring 2014 traditional BSN and have yet to find a thread for it. Although I opened it for applicants, I would also encourage previous applicants, current/previous students, and applicants for other semesters at UTHSC to join in and share in this exciting time!
Basically you have like 1 or 2 clinicals per semester that go along with one of your classes, besides one semester with no clinicals, and then the last semester of school it's only clinicals with no classes. I know that one semester has like 19 hours loaded into it (heard that from current student) I really don't want to do that! My mom went to the school and graduated in 91 and at that time the pacesetter wasn't around, when she came with me to go to an info session this spring and they explained the pacesetter, she really thought it would take away from nursing school. They say it will make you more "job ready" upon graduation. But honestly from what I've heard from plenty of nurses is that it isn't going to look any better to do that. All employers want to see is that you have a BSN from a good school and passed the boards! Idk, I wanted to do the traditional route...learn your skills at clinicals as you go through each class for each area like OB, ICU, psych, etc. I'm not so happy about this one UT! I'm a traditional person
At the info session the lady speaking said students who participated in the pacesetter program really enjoyed it because it enables them to develop more of a trusting relationship with the nurse whom you are shadowing, they felt as if they learned more and were given more responsibility by the nurses because they trusted them.
I haven't got my evaluation either (but at the same time, I have a green circle on my online status), and so I decided to call up the school today--plus it's October. So I called and spoke to the admission lady first about the evaluations. She said that the registrar was the one who handled all that ("evaluation"), and so I asked her to transfer me to them, which she did. Then I explained the same stuff to the registrar, and right after I spoke, the registar said "Hold on and I'll transfer you to the admissions'. Ok, now you understand... It's like a cat and mouse game. So then I told my situation again, and maybe it was the same admission lady I talk to or another lady. Whatever, she had a loud tone of voice, and flat out I thought she was rude.SO I asked her... I haven't received my evaluations yet. It's October. Have you all sent out all the evaluations yet?
And she responded...We don't send out evaluations until you have been accepted. (Ok,...in my mind... some of the folks on all nurses have got evaluations. Wouldn't what she say be contradicting?)
Then I asked her...If we do get accepted, will our status online change (i.e. green circle to green check mark)?
And she responded... No, if you get accepted, then you'll get an official acceptance mail that says you're in. Those status online won't change until after you get accepted. (Ok again [in my mind] I was like all those student from the prior all nurses forum knew of their acceptances via the online system.)
And she told me...I don't know where you have being get all that information, but that's not it.
Anyways, sorry for the long post guys. I've been somewhat frustrated with these admission people. It's like you don't get an evaluation, and you just want to know what's going on right? So you ask them about the status, and it's like they don't even want to help or answer your question.
Yeah, this is just my account. If you guys did called up the school, and you did talk to some other people that said otherwise...Feel free to add to the forum.
I actually emailed the admissions office and they finally responded stating that students will receive their letters of acceptance or to interview in November 15 or after but that's when they will start sending them out. Hope that answers some of concers
I received my third eval today! It just depressed me lol ugh if I don't get in I already know one class I'll be retaking and it will bump my GPA up big time! Just wish I could have retaken sooner
Just got another eval too! Although my GPA isn't quite as good as I thought it was Hopefully we don't have to wait too much longer to hear something...

Yep, she said at the information session they were really happy with the program and were seriously considering doing pacesetter only. She said the board would be voting on it before Spring 2014 & the people who get accepted will be notified of the change with their acceptance letters.
