UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016

Published

Hey guys, just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON hopefuls who are applying for Spring 2016. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin to play what seems to be the longest waiting game ever! I am more than confident that each and every one of us will be receiving our acceptance letters around this same time next year:) Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

@ckcox

WOW. Thats a lot of info. Thanks for compiling. I agree that it may not make sense.

But it makes no sense because the info is incomplete. We do not know:

(1) where those applicants went to school - University vs Community College, UT System vs Other University, Texas School vs Out of State School.

(2) how many class retakes applicants had to boost their GPA

(3) HESI retakes - may matter, may not

(4) extracurricular activities

(5) other experiences that could increase their value to UTHealth

They look at numbers but, behind the numbers is a real person, and they look at that too. I think.

I agree, I just graduated from The University of Alabama with a BS in Healthcare Management and am currently retaking some classes that i took freshman year and did not do so well in. I am hoping they do not hold this against me.

I certainly hope they look at the applicant as a whole rather than a number game (because the numbers are all over the place). I am in the middle of my application now and have not found a section for community involvement/extracirricular activities outside of the work experience section-- Is this where you put this information?

Thank you so much!

I just put actual work in that I didn't put any extracurricular activities, etc. on the application

well... I put down that I am a number one, top of the list, king of the hill, top of the heap, and a big Sinatra fan. I hope thats enough.

I'm having an impatient day today. Frustrated having to pay so much non refundable to UH while waiting to hear from UT. I just wish UT was more aligned with other school acceptances so we weren't put in these situations. Grr lol having to remind myself to just breathe. Soon enough right?!?!

Same here. After attending one of the events at another program this past weekend, I think I am going to go ahead and move forward. If accepted to UTH then I may reconsider however I don't want to miss out on this great opportunity. Good luck guys!

Hey guys, happy Monday! After reading recent comments about the frustrations of the delay of hearing back from UTH makes me wonder if I should go ahead and start studying for the TEAS V to open up more options. Again, I am applying for Summer and Fall and feel like i have cornered myself by only taking the HESI due to TWU, UH, and most other schools accept only the TEAS V.

So... does anyone have any advice on the TEAS V vs the HESI? I did pretty well on the HESI (92% overall) but have heard that the TEAS V is a completely different test (and harder). Also, I have not taken Bio yet..

Thanks guys!

Hey ckcox,

If you want to open up more options then I would definitely encourage you to take the TEAS V. I also debated taking it on top of studying for the HESI but I am really glad I did. It is a completely different test. I scored pretty well on the HESI but lower on the TEAS V. I found that on the HESI you are able to eliminate answer choices pretty well in order to get the right answer where as on the TEAS I had a harder time choosing between multiple answer choices. I would highly recommend the book from ATI as they make the exam. I also found practice problems on quizlet. The science portion was the hardest for me because it covered so much material not just anatomy but chemistry, biology, and geology. Again, everyone is different this was just from my personal experience. Just find a good study guide and brush up on the sciences and you should do well! It will help that you have already taken the HESI so you will be familiar with computer exams, time management, etc.

jmarg4,

Thank you so much, this really helps! I guess I will start studying then :banghead:

I personally had the opposite experience. I did well on the HESI except in A&P bc I wasn't done yet with class. That section is so important. I actually did better on the TEAS. The science is definitley broader though. If you look at averages you can do better on the TEAS and be well above national averages compared to the HESI which many people score well on.

It's out. I just got my acceptance email. Everyone good luck and go check. :-)
