UTHSC Houston - Summer 2016 Applicants

Published

Hey everyone!

I couldn't find a thread for Summer 2016 that was active so I'm starting one here! I am also an applicant for Fall 2016 but I'm applying for both because the deadlines are close and I really want to go here!!

So far I'm taking courses over the summer right now and going to finish my prerequisites this fall. I JUST finished the HESI exam today!!! Hope to hear from all of you soon

lbart23, I hope you make it in this time around. What were your sub-scores on your HESI if you don't mind telling me? Your post is what sort of scares me, but I thank you for being honest. I don't understand how some people with lower scores get in while great performers like do not. I'm very much hoping to get into this school. TWU is my second choice. Reading this motivates me even more to to well on my TEAS V which I will take next month. TWU's next application deadline is 2/1/16 for the Fall of 2016. TWU does not have summer admission.

I'm even going to do an "ace in the hole" and apply to Lonestar - Tomball. They use a point system for admission which ranges from 0 - 8. I have 7.744 points according to their scoring guidelines.

I see from MYUTH that my "TO DO" list no longer says HESI a2, so I take it that my transcript made it there from Elsevier.

I hope everyone that is here in this thread will make it into UT! I really would like to see people that obviously take an interest in nursing (and I know that I am making a big generalization by stating people who join this forum are interested in the nursing profession enough to be accepted in the top program in town). Think positive people!

@bearfur I don't mean to scare you!! I just want y'all to know that it is not as straight forward of a process as we may think in regards to who they pick. It sounds like you have a pretty competitive application though and with your determination and heart, I am positive that you will get into the school you were meant to be in!!! Good luck!!

My HESI scores are as follows:

Grammar-92

Reading-88

A&P-88

Math-96

Vocab-92

CT-890

They aren't stellar, but still not horrible. I am debating whether or not to take it again since I hadn't taken A&P 2 at the time I took the HESI. I am even thinking of retaking the class I made a B in so I can have a perfect 4.0 all around, but I don't really think that will help.

Submitted my application yesterday but definitely not confident after reading this thread! The info session made the admitted stats seem a lot lower. My GPA is pretty low from my previous bachelor's at UT Austin. Hopefully they will take that into account. I'm also considering retaking the HESI since I didn't have a chance to study the first time around, but I'm afraid I'll lower my score....

Here are my stats:

Pre-req: 3.55

Science: 3.0

HESI: 91

Again, my scores are very similar. I have a degree(s) all ready - I'm not certain if that will help or not. I have a B.S. in biology and a master's degree in education. Your scores are certainly competitive in my opinion! I would agree that re-taking that course you made a "B" in probably would not help. At this point, I can't see why you didn't get in. I am nervous as anyone here. There doesn't seem to be "a formula" that you could apply. It seems to be that the committee is fairly random about their selection which is a mystery to me!

I think if you have finished A&P II that it would definitely help you the second time around. What was your A&P HESI score? I think having a B.S. may help....I hope that it will help me as well. Good luck to you and keep us posted. I have been reading we won't know until March of next year.

At the info session I attended last month they said they are going to send out decisions on April 15th. Apparently it used to be April 1st but they didn't want people to think it was an April Fools joke. ha!

Also, for those considering retaking classes, wouldn't that only help for admissions to this program starting spring 2017? The fall deadline is in January. I only have one pre-req left so I can't wait that long...

My HESI scores seem pretty average:

reading- 92

grammar- 92

vocab- 90

a&P- 84

math-98

CT- 850

overall- 91.2%

Even though I was still taking physio at the time, I'm not sure I could raise my a&p score. The questions seemed super random from what I remember.

AP II would definitely help on the Hesi. I had really specific questions about certain body systems that I would have not been able to answer had I not taken AP II first.

I think why we don't see some of the people with higher GPA's get in is because they retake classes to get those GPAs and I think UTHSC kind of frowns upon the multiple retake of classes. UTHSC only counts the retake into your GPA, not your original grade so that is why people appear with higher GPAs. It kind of disheartening though since I have a 4.0 and have never retaken a class, so hopefully they take that into account. This is just my opinion though.

Alya - your scores are great, I would say better than average. My overall was a 93.6 with and A&P of 88 and a CT of 890 so your scores are not much different. Anyhow, thank you for giving me information about it being April before we know anything. That seems late since that if you are accepted, you are to begin the next month (end of May). Good luck to you!

I think I had two or three questions on the HESI a2 A&P section about the muscle group quadriceps femoris. I can't remember the question exactly, but I thought it was odd that they bring up the same muscle group that number of times. The A&P was definitely the toughest part of the test for me.

kktegan, I think you are correct. I took chemistry and micro again, but that is because some universities require you to have those classes within the last five years. I originally took those 2 courses back in the early 1980's. Yes, I am an "older than average" student! I am not certain how the admission committee handle something like that, if it was a qualified "re-take" or not due to the time lapse between the two classes. I have a B.S in biology that earned in 1986. All the rest of the science classes I had not previously taken (including A&P). Also, I had not taken government, history, etc. so all of those are current too. I guess I'll find out the committee's option in mid-April. I'm hopeful but I'm not counting on being admitted into this program. They have hundreds of applicants they have to whittle down into some number, is it 140 the size of the new class of nursing students?

I believe the class size is around 120, or at least that's what I was told at the info session I attended. However, they also said there wasn't a waitlist and I recently found out that's not true. So now I'm unsure of what else we were misinformed about.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to change your myUTH password? I hate having to look up the crazy one that was assigned every time I sign in....
