UTA Online Academic Partnership BSN Program - Dallas Hospitals

Published

Hello-

I have just learned about this the online (entire program including pre-req courses) ap bsn program at uta. I read about this on another uta thread but it was not as clear as it was explained today to me. This is similar to the twu weekend bsn program; however, the difference is you will conduct your clinicals at the hospital where you are employed. No matter what position/status where you work (partnered hospital), you can participate in this program at a discounted rate. So far, I believe uta partnered with parkland, baylor and thr but I believe the thr program is different. uta/thr partnership offers full financial support (tuition, fees, and books) by thr for the 2nd bacc bsn program. The ap bsn program only offers you a discount but you would need to use either scholarships or tuition reimbursement from your employer (hospital). :twocents:

I am so impressed with the fact that the entire program is online and it is estimated to take 18 months to complete (again including all pre-courses). The program is laid out great because you can take all pre-req sciences (except gen chem), psychology courses, stats and other pre-reqs online; your clinicals can be worked out with the clinical partnership manager. Since I work full-time in a non-clinical area, weekends would be so much better for me to participate in my clinicals. I believe the manager will be flexible with me on clinicals b/c we work closely together on a weekly basis.

I can start earlier with this program compared to the twu weekend program. Some pre-req courses are only 5-8 weeks long so you can complete your pre-reqs faster and courses are offered more than traditional program.

I would highly recommend this program for any career changes, who cannot afford to stop working full-time but have the desire to change careers into nursing. :redbeathe Go to www.uta.edu/nursing click on prospective students, click academic partnership, click on academic partnership under bsn program and read more about the opportunity.

Please note: you do not have to work at a hospital to be admitted into this program. Once you are admitted into the junior/senior level of the nursing program, uta will coordinate a clinical site for you at one of their partnership hospitals.

Is there anyone out who have started the ap bsn program either fall 2009 or spring 2010? I would love to hear how things are going in the online courses (whether you just started pre-req courses or you are taking the nursing courses).

I hope this has have been helpful information for those of you who really need flexibility while in the 2nd bsn fast track/accelerator program.

look forward to your response!

Hey everyone...new to the site as a user, but have been reading for a while...

Let me give you my 2 cents worth on several of threads...

I work for Baylor. Am an AP student who just applied for Spring 2012. I have 1 course left, pharm. I attempted the Chem at UTA (online) it was a NIGHTMARE...it is not easy. Instead, I opted to take an online Chem course, which I am still in, at Ocean County College in NJ (online) it is CHEM 181 DL...and yes, it will transfer. The cost is higher, $600, however the course is much easier and the labs much easier than the UTA course... we are over half way through and I have a 100 average in the course...so if Chem scares you - take it there - not at UTA... (btw my average in the UTA course was a 48- I dropped)...

Also, on the AP 1 and 2 at UTA, ****** is the greatest...test questions are pulled from multiple online sources...the labs are straight forward and straight out of your lab manual - often word for word... and the final is usually used as extra credit and consists of all of her quizzes, so print those out and keep them handy at final time...

Also, the pre-nursing courses on EPIC are difficult, not content wise, but if you are used to using Blackboard or WebCT, EPIC takes some getting used too...

I have heard many things about the AP program with regards to getting in...the #1 thing is to be partnered - as those individuals working at the their facility will get those spots first...meaning, if you work at Baylor, you are competing against all applicants working at Baylor - FIRST... my understanding is that if you are not paired, you only get paired if spots aren't filled or there are X # of unpartnered spots available per entry time - which means you are going up against a larger pool of applicants - that said, any employement at a partnered facility counts. (Logic here - why would Baylor not want their own employee in their cohort, they want this graduate to stay at Baylor) But do not let this discourage you for those who are unpaired...it's just that the partnered hospitals are working to "grow their own nurses" for their vacancies...it's actually brilliant - whoever came up with it...

I have also heard that if you complete the pre-reqs successfully and meet the GPA requirements in your sciences, etc., make a high score on your HESI and work for a partnered hospital, that you are pretty safe in getting a spot at your partnered hospital... (again there aren't many folks on here complaining about not getting in...so I am guessing this logic is probably somewhat accurate.)

I hope this helps some of you...I find a common thread amongst all of us pre-nursing students...we like to worry and we want to know as much information as we can get...I think those are good things and both will make us excellent nurses!!!!

bbailey1972 Thanks for posting that! It was very informative and I am sure it will be a big help to all of us! Good luck!

I second that. Great very informative post. Maybe by the time I get ready in a couple years, the already employed partnered people will have worked their way through. I know the only way I can get in is with straight As since I have no ties.

I'm not happy with UTA because I took the DCCCD Intro Chem course that was pretty thorough, learned a lot, great teacher, studied night and day, and pulled an A. It doesn't count . Yet other schools accept it. I was thinking I would wait til I knew I was applying and then take the UTA Chem course. Your post makes me think otherwise.

Was that your first chem course? What do you think made it so hard? Are the Ocean County tests proctored (because I think you have to pay for each proctored exam off site)? I had heard of other people also liking that course.

Maybe drops and complaints will force a change. UTA puts on a good face, has great ideas, but seems very disorganized. From what I have heard, the online Micro also has issues. Too bad -- I need an online Micro.

I took the online Chemistry class at UTA. All I can say is OMG!!! Run, don't walk from that class.

bbailey1972: Thanks for your post, very informative. I have a question for you.. What professor did you take for A&P 2? I am about to take that class in August..

I also have to take Chemistry.. Now I am worry reading your post about it :s

p.d. by the way, I also work for Baylor :) what department are you in?

It was the content (too broad - you cover general chem, organic and biologic chem in 12 weeks)...when all you need is a general chem with lab.

At Ocean County College - the exams are NOT proctored...you take them online, just as you would any other college.

I have to agree with you on the disorganization at UTA, but a program like this - a leader in the online / advanced partnership concept - is going to have their off days and reassessments...this educational path is still new and they are feeling their way around it....

Good Luck!

Thanks so much! I am going to take a look at the Ocean County College for that class..

Have you been accepted yet?

I have not been accepted yet, but have applied. I won't know anything until November... but am very optimistic....

Hello all! I just wanted to give a quick update! I have now completed week two of online micro through uta and I am carrying an A :) for now at least... The course material is not what is difficult. What is difficult is the professor likes the gotcha game... Her questions are often aimed trying to trick the student which makes no sense to me... You have to be weary of what you are reading in her tests... I'll say this each time o have submitted a quiz I thought I knew I got 100 on it and it has never been the case... I know the material but I had to have gotten tripped up in the wording. So for all who are considering this course for next term take caution!!! You can do it but read SLOWLY!!! I will keep you all filled in as the course progresses! :)

Great info bbailey1972!! Really helped ease my mind about the structure of A&P2.

I would like to talk to anyone who works at JPS?? If you could PM I would appreciate that....just some general questions regarding employment while in the program....thanks!!

Is JPS a partner with UTA?? If so, that is awesome! I need to get a job since I just moved to FW and working for a partner hospital will kill 2 birds with 1 stone (hopefully!)

Yes, JPS is a partnering hospital. :) Baylor, JPS, Cooks, Parkland, THR are the ones that I have been told are partnered with UTA. I went ahead and applied for 2 P/T positions about a month ago, but haven't heard anything so that worries me a little. :( I would really like to talk to someone who works there and see how the whole process works.
