It seems that no one has started a thread for the Fall 2018 program applicants, so I figured I would rally us all together to support one another and share our experiences, stats, and where we are in the application process!
The deadline for accepted students to accept their spot into the program is March 23rd. So I would imagine after that deadline is when they will start calling from the waitlist. Orientation is July 10/11 depending on which program you are in, so I imagine you could hear something between next week and into July.
Congrats to all who got in. I was waitlisted (I only applied for the Online program, for just one clinical site). My stats:
4.0 Science GPA
3.9 GPA
HESI 97% (Just adding in case anyone is reading who's applying for the next semester that you'll need to take the TEAS too -- I was advised before the change.)
Previous bachelor's and master's degree (I think that's only one consideration combined)
I know that this is not weighed in the application at all, but I have also worked in public health for 5 years, including for the World Health Organization.
(Read the great post by @cheyenne_ekaterina on March 15th about considerations).
I had already decided to go to another school when I heard back from UTA, so I'm taking my name off the waitlist and not upset. I'm going to Johns Hopkins (#1 or #2 in the country depending on the year) on their biggest scholarship. I don't say that to brag, but to say that it is RIDICULOUS that someone can get a big scholarship to go to the #1/2 school in the nation for nursing, but can't get into their state school program. This is not a knock against the advisors or professors in the UTA program (in fact, the advisors were always very kind and helpful, and I've heard great things about both the reputation of and actual education students got in the program, so if you got in, hats off to you!!!) but it a knock against the administrators. I also know that I limited myself by only selecting one possible clinical site, but still, what I am saying is that it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to get into this UTA program for the site of your choice, even with a nearly maximum GPA, even with some considerations. PLEASE APPLY TO MULTIPLE SCHOOLS!!!
Most importantly, I just feel horribly bad for bright Texas students who want to go into nursing, where there is predicted to be a shortage of 70,000 nurses by 2020 (according to UTA's own website) but are unable to because of a SERIOUS bottleneck in the number of spots in nursing schools. I understand that this online/partnership hospital program was established to specifically help meet those demands, but if people with 4.0 GPAs are still getting turned away from getting the education that would let them meet that demand it means that so much more needs to be done...UT administrators (UTA as well as other UT campuses) - you need to FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!!!
For other students looking for advice on how to get accepted into this program I honestly think that the only way you can be sure to get a spot is for you to work at a partnered hospital before applying and have a really solid GPA. Best of luck!
