Am applying to UT tyler nursing program for spring 2015. Anyone else applying? Feel free to post comments.
I struggled with reading. English is not my first language. some of the questions could had many answers, when reading the paragraph. " the family was happy when they came back from vacation?" And the paragraph didn't explained emotions.... I was like... Really man! I guess I need to read more literature.
Hey guys! Thought I would join your discussion. I have applied to the Accelerated program at UT Tyler. Here's what I was told:
*minimum GPA 3.0 (this would eliminate some folks...the traditional only requires a 2.75 GPA)
*minimum TEAS scores (same as traditional program)
*having a degree is no longer a requirement
*of course, summer classes (this might also eliminate some people with conflicts...kids home from school, etc)
The advisor wasn't sure how many they were admitting to the program. I'm hoping it's everyone that meets the criteria but that's probably wishful thinking!
Here's my stats:
nursing/science GPA: 3.8
overall GPA: 3.2 (the grades from my younger years are haunting me!!)
Teas reading: 81%
Teas math: 70%
Let the waiting begin!! Good luck to everyone!!
2sons,
Thanks for the information. I did not even know about the 3.0 GPA requirement. That is not what is posted on their website for the ABSN program. Man I am so confused!
Look what I found:
https://www.uttyler.edu/academics/undergraduate-majors/patriot-accelerated-nursing-degree.php
It says, "The University of Texas at Tyler offers individuals with baccalaureate or higher degrees in a non-nursing field the opportunity to obtain the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN)."
As for GPA, it appears the requirement is different for degree, and pre-req vs. nursing pre-req:
A minimum GPA of 3.0 from baccalaureate degree or on required pre-requisites
For nursing pre-req it says, "minimum GPA of 2.75 on nursing prerequisites"
So for those of us with degrees it seems that we must have a GPA of 3.0 for the degree? Hmmm... see how confusing this is?! We are not required to have a degree and yet we must have had a 3.0 GPA if we are degreed? So if I scored all A's on my nursing pre-requisites but my overall GPA is a 2.9, I am screwed? Or do they in that case take the 4.0 nursing pre-req only GPA?
I have no idea anymore.... (sigh). But I am starting to stress out about it. I shouldn't be because I cannot change it now regardless so might as well relax.
Oh and for the record, I am with you guys. My degree GPA was about 3.4. I am currently taking A&P I and II, and Medical Terminology II. I have already taken A&P though and scored B's in both (about 20 years ago). I am retaking them to refresh this old brain before (hopefully) attending nursing school!
Take care,
LW
Wow... just noticed this too:
American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers
I don't recall seeing this before either. I know the immunization requirements were there but this is new, I think.
I was told to wait for acceptance for the immunization shots/records.

lmkea71,
It is odd that the website does not list minimum TEAS for the ABSN program:
https://www.uttyler.edu/nursing/college/undergraduate/accelerated-bsn-admissions.php
But it does for the traditional:
https://www.uttyler.edu/nursing/college/undergraduate/bsn-admission.php
I was told UT Tyler nursing does have minimum TEAS score requirments by the advisor, and was told again the morning of the TEAS exam just prior to the test starting. But, I am beginning to think this is no longer the case just like the degree requirment. The only thing that makes sense is that they are maybe experiencing significantly inadequate application/enrollment numbers and so have reduced the requirements drastically. If I recall correctly, I was told that they are going to accept 60 applicants.
So, lmkea71 I am with you- I too am really scared now because I thought I would have a better chance given that I have a degree already. By design, you and I would only have had to compete against others with degrees. Since this change though, why wouldn't any regular student simply take the minimum pre-reqs and then go the ABSN route instead of traditional? It seems like this would reduce the school time to about 3 years instead of 4. Overall, I would guess that a degree, while not required, helps your admission chances. As for the TEAS, the test is required for the ABSN, but appears to no longer have a minimum score for admission. However, surely a higher score is more competitive than a lower score. Pre-req (science/nursing courses only) GPA appears to have a 2.75 minimum, but surely a 3.8 is better than a 3.0. In my opinion though, this can be very misleading and possibly unfair. I mean we all know how different teachers and schools can affect difficulty, right? So hopefully, the selection will be based on all considerations. I would think UT Tyler's main goal is to (ideally) have 100% enrollment, 100% graduation, and 100% job placement. I wouldn't think that they would want anyone to fail or drop out.
As a side note, I would like to point out that many seem to struggle with the math portion of the TEAS exam. If it were me, I would be hammering this on my own to improve it as much as I can. I would do everything possible to master basic math operations. The math on the TEAS is basic math. Math used in nursing I think is mostly basic math. So if you have trouble with decimals, fractions, the decimal system/conversions, then I think it would be very wise to work on it or seek some additional help like a tutor. If you have the minimum (i.e. low) math TEAS score and you are accepted, can you imagine how hard it might be in an accelerated program having to convert units and calculate doses and stuff? I am guessing that instructors expect you to already know this material.
Sorry for the excessively long post!
