UT Health Pacesetter BSN Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Yes, it is extremely early to begin talking about the Spring 2018 class, however, I thought it would be nice if we could all get together here and go through our pre-req/application/acceptance journey. It would be fun to lend support, chronicle our stresses and excitements and see how everything unfolds for us from now until the first day of class (assuming we get accepted).

I'll start:

I'm taking my pre-reqs at Lonestar (10 hrs for Spring, 14 hrs for Summer). I plan to take 18 hrs for Fall and will be testing out of 15 hrs via CLEP. I work PRN in a Critical Care unit at a major hospital. I will be taking the HESI in May; once Spring semester ends. Lastly, I have high hopes to be accepted into the Honors program once I am eligible to apply, since I have a deep interest in research.

I hope to hear from some of you! The application deadline is September 1 and there is a webinar info session at 10am tomorrow.

God bless.

Hello Everyone,

I will be applying for the 2018 Spring Pacesetter program also. I am extremely nervous after reading all the prior forum about how competitive this school is.

Hey everyone! First post but I'll be applying for Spring 2018 as well! Almost done with my classes, I have microbiology, A&P 2, and nutrition that I will be taking at San Jac South this summer. First choice is UThealth and then TWU. Anyone taken the HESI a2 have any advice?

I'm actually down to study together!

Hi Everyone. I am also applying for Spring 2018. I am taking Micro, Chem and Philosophy over the summer at HCC. I have the Hesi scheduled for June 4. Anyone attending the upcoming info session on May 19?

Hey guys! I'm looking to apply to UTH's Spring 18 semester as well. Over this summer I'll be taking A&P II as well as Composition II and in the fall I have Microbio, Pathophysiology, Psychology, and Nursing Theories. I haven't scheduled the HESI yet but does anyone know if we only need to take it one time even if we're applying to two different nursing schools? I'm not sure how all of it works.

Thanks, Tess 73! Three classes left to go before I've completed my pre-reqs.

I've also thought about apply for some ASN programs, but would prefer UT above any other!

I will be taking the HESI within the next couple months. I recently got the books and will try to start studying them. I do have two friends who recently took theirs and both said it didn't seem quite as hard as they anticipated.

I read recently that the first consideration is HESI scores? Has anyone else heard this as well? Then, if you make it through that round they look at GPA, etc.

I will be applying with these stats:

Nursing pre-req GPA: 3.74

Science GPA: 4.0

This process is definitely nerve-racking!

I also heard that HESI score is the what they use to make the first cuts. I haven't scheduled my HESI yet because I am planning to also apply to TWU which requires me to take the TEAS. I am studying for them both. I haven't calculated my GPA'S yet either kinda scared to; I know its near a 3.1 or so.

I wanted to go but my manager can't afford to let me off. Please inform me of how it went.

Hi! I'll also be applying to UTHealth Spring 2018. I have some questions to ask, and I hope that you can all answer.

1. How many pre-req classes can you retake?

2. How do your retaken class grades impact your Overall GPA, Science GPA, and Pre-Req GPA?

3. Also, if I have an overall GPA of a 3.5, Pre-Req GPA of 3.8, and I'm planning to take my hesi next month but lets say its around 92%. Would I have a chance of getting in? (Question for people who are already in UTHealth SON or people that just know)

I'm super nervous about getting rejected and all, but I hope that we can all persevere and make it through!

Hi! I can tell you what I have heard regarding your questions. I don't think there is hard number regarding how many classes you can retake. But I do think the more you retake, the more noticeable it is for you. They do take the higher grade into consideration when calculating your GPA though. From what I've read, consistently retaking classes can show as a negative on your application. They want to know you can handle the workload of a very intensive nursing program.

I think the stats you gave are competitive. I do wonder how much our overall GPA is considered though. I have classes from over 15 years ago that I took (young and not focused) that I did NOT do well in. I have other classes from the same school that I got A's and B's in that I would like to use as my electives, but have worried about the other classes being factored into my overall grade. I may not submit the transcript from that school and may just retake the classes- I'm still trying to decide that.

I called UTHealth today to ask about my questions and here are the answers.

1. Theres an unlimited number of retakes that you can have, she didn't really specify on how many courses you retake counts as a bad course.

2. The course that you have a higher grade in will go towards your Pre-Req GPA and Science GPA, but they will also consider your Overall (all course history) GPA as well during application.

Just an FYI...you are expected to list every school you attended along with your transcript. I've been told there's a database that they can see what schools you've attended and if you leave them off your app they may throw it out. Again this is what I've heard, so I'm not sure how true it is. I've attended 5 universities over the last 22 years, so I have a couple transcripts that have nothing to do with my pre-requisites, but I included them on all my nursing school apps offer the past 2 years.
