UT Health & Sciences Houston... # Game Now?!?!

Published

Hi I was wondering if anybody else is applying to UT Health and Sciences. I am applying for the Fall 2012 semester and have discovered that they are no longer doing the interviews and the application has no Student statement! When I called and asked about it I was told that they still look at all the applications and don't just take the top 10%..... But how is that possible if there is nothing but numbers for them to go by? I can understand how the interviews are time consuming but there is nothing I can say to make me stand out.... just my numbers. I sure hope that they are good enough!!

Does anybody know how the GPA is calculated if I retake a course and make a better grade? I took a semester of college when I was 19, and failed my college algebra (and I studied SO hard). I have retaken it and managed to make an A. I know that they will look at my better grade, but is the poor grade calulated with my overall GPA?

Nope. They only calculate your higher grade. I was disappointed to find out they weren't doing interviews as well. I talked to one of the admission counselors and was told the same thing about looking at all applications. I was also told that it was strictly GPA driven. If you have a high GPA, you will get in. I asked what was considered competitive and she told me as long as I had a 3.4-3.5 she strongly felt that I would get in. I have a 3.8, so I'm hoping it will fly. They also really look at your science GPA alone. Please keep me updated on your status! What is your GPA?

Oh Joy. That makes me nervous.... I will have a 3.8 GPA at the end of this semester but when I calculate in the grades my bad semester back from when I was 19, it brings my GPA down to a 3.35 :( What stinks is I have retaken 2 of those classes and made A's in those classes.... but unfortunately I think that they will calculate those in. At least my science GPA is a 4.0 :) Guess I need to call and ask before I stress myself out too bad. I am honestly considering retaking my HESI though because my scores were not as high as I wanted. I got an 87.86 with my lowest score on the AP section, 80 :( I should have done better. My critical thinking section was an 850. How about yourself? Have you taken the HESI yet? I wished that since they stopped interviews that at least they would have a student statement.... I cannot figure out why they decided to turn this into a # game...

Specializes in ER, IICU, PCU, PACU, EMS.

Moved to Texas Student forums for more of a response.

Unfortunately getting into UTHSCH is all about numbers at this point. The higher your overall GPA, prereqs GPA, and science GPA...PLUS a high HESI score your chances are better to get into the program. They no longer look at interviews and really have nothing else to go by other than your scores. UTMB might be an option for you because they have an interview and essay portion that gives you an opportunity to explain yourself.

I'm applying at UTMB too. If you retook the classes, they will use the higher grade from those classes. Don't stress. You'll be fine!

I just spoke to Tarsha Young at UTHSC and she said that they only look at your pre-req GPA, not your overall, as well as your science GPA. She also explained that they will use only my most recent grades in the classes that I've retaken... Phew!! That will leave my overall/pre-req GPA at 3.6875 with a 4.0 in sciences :) I feel a bit better now!

I am applying to UTHSC, where I REALLY want to go, as well as UTMB. Fingers are crossed!!

I knew you would be fine! You'll get in. Have you gone to an information session yet? That is my number one choice in schools too. My fingers are crossed for you! Please keep me updated on your status. Where have you taken your pre req's?

Yes I have been to an information seminar, but that was last spring. Now I am am just getting everything ready to go. All my pre-reqs have been taken at San Jac for the most part. Only one class is being used from the University I attended back in 04. I've already filled out an application online, but have yet to hit submit because I need to fill in my job history. Everything else has already been sent over to them. I'm ready!! How about you?

I will apply after next semester and have taken all my pre req's at HCC. Why do they want your job history? I haven't worked in a few years because I've been a stay at home mom and I've only worked in the administrative aspect of the medical field. Now I'm freaking out.

I've been a stay at home mom as well ;) Your not alone. I think they just want your work history to see what kind of person you are maybe? I mean that would be the only thing I could think of..... Unfortunately I have no clue, but I am sure that regardless it shouldn't hurt you. I haven't even worked in any medical at all, but I KNOW that I want to become a CRNA to help people.

Ha! Me too. That's my goal, too!! I wish we didn't have to work for a year in critical care before applying to graduate school. I can understand it but wish that we could just turn around and go while working. I definitely want to go to UTHSC for that even though Baylor offers it as well. Those are the only two CRNA programs in Houston. I think there are two in Dallas and that's it for Texas. I have to get into UT!
