USF MSN-CNL non-nurse summer 2018

Published

Hey everyone, I thought to start a thread for the current University of San Francisco Summer 2018 application period for the ME-MSN for non-nurse program. I've read the threads from previous application periods and thought it would be nice to start one for this current application period. Feel free to start posting about anything you'd want to talk about or share.

Good luck everyone!

Nothing yet today for me! Totally feels like they are doing rolling admission over the next week or 2. Hahah whatever they are doing I hope they hurry up :) Stay strong everyone!!

WHATEVER they are doing!!! So true. It seems like when we think we have them figured out they want to switch it up just to keep us guessing.

We should give up and then they will start calling again. lol

Hello, future Dons.

I was once in your shoes last semester. I am currently in CNL 25 @ the Main Campus in USF. This is our first semester. There was a 2-week delay in us receiving our statuses' as well and some of us didn't hear until a month prior to orientation.

Others didn't hear until the week prior to start - the process is much more complicated that one can imagine but the wait is worthwhile.

Don't fret, the time will come soon.

Good luck to everyone out there.

@mztpkck,CNA Do you have any advice on financial aid/affording this program? Do you know what most students have done to pay? Scholarships? Rich uncles? Loans? Thank you so much for your kind words of hope! ;)

Hello YellowMaskrosbarn;

This advice can perhaps also pertain to other nursing students who are not attending USF.

There are several situations on how my classmates and I prepped for being financially prepared for our program.

I highly suggest all of you to apply to scholarships now and/or inform family members of private loans regardless of your situation.

For myself, in the program, I found that tuition and textbooks are not your only concerns; there are fees, material (scrubs, stethoscopes, etc), parking, transportation (and potentially extra books you will find helpful that will make you a successful nurse) that you need to keep into account when planning your financial situation.

1) Some classmates are living off their savings and do not work.

2) Others have saved enough for the entire program and are not working while in the program.

3) Some of us, including myself, are still working as we do not have the financial backing to be able to afford the program on grants, financial aid and personal/private loans alone.

Review your financial aid package from USF prior to accepting it and confirm with the financial aid department if you are able to receive more assistance.

I was in cohort 20 and I would not recommend it any more. I am doing my DNP currently and feel I paid way too much for my MSN. I would never do it again. I did not get an increase in pay for my CNL, although I was working as nurse manager. I would seriously consider other programs.

Thanks for the input! Could you elaborate more on your experience as to why you feel this way? Totally curious, bc I was in a CNL program before.

Thanks you for this insight! I am also curious as to why you did not like the CNL role or program. Would you recommend someone going to an ABSN program instead?

@pckillmonger

I felt there was a lack of cohesiveness between instruction. As you may know the DNP students are required to teach and depending on the instructor they can be tremendously insightful or just fulfilling their obligations. Some instructors are too busy with their own studies to help their students. For the money you spent you want quality instruction. The program also is unnecessarily rushed and hurried. There are not enough positions at hospitals perhaps six to ten? Most people in my cohort went on to pursue FNP or nurse education. I believe cannot tell you which program is best for you because I do not know your situation. Perhaps CNL is the best position for you. Look at the role and consider the extra costs as some others have said.

@nursemanager2be - wow, i wasn't aware DNP students also teach the MSN classes. Does that happen often or are there faculty members assisting them? Also, do you know if students in your cohort worked as floor nurses rather than nurse leaders? I would also most get jobs as a floor RN because those have the most openings rather then managerial positions.

I know my teachers at GU were on the floor as CNLs. Out there, the pay didn't make much difference but when I told them I was going back home to work they were like yeah that's where the money is.
