I was just accepted into the summer upper division and I feel the essay is weighted heavily. My science GPA is 3.75, however, my overall is 3.55. That being said, I have also spoke with quite a number of other student looking to gain admittance into both the upper division and 2nd degree programs that claim to of had higher GPA's than my own that were rejected. If what they said was true, then the essay is what hindered their passage into the program.
I'm applying to the program as well but don't have my hopes up. I was accepted into USF but I am waiting for my Micro class to post so I can apply to the nursing program. I think my science overall is 3.5 but my BA GPA is like a 3.2. The only thing I have going for me is I am an LPN and I had a 4.0 in nursing school. Although I had previously applied to UF and got denied. They didn't even factor in my LPN. They only looked at my BA. So, I'm hoping USF will take it into consideration. Did you get to pick which essays you did? Or do they pick them for you?
The USF College of Nursing site has the 3 questions you need to answer for your essay and how it has to be written, such as single spaced and no more than 2 pages. As far as being an LPN, you can incorporate that into your essay on how you feel limited in the scope of practice and want to do more for your patients.
@Medic6758, congrats on your acceptance! I'll be starting the 2nd degree program this summer. I agree with you that while grades are important, the essay is weighed heavily. At a Stampede Into Bull Nursing (SIBN) panel discussion with the professors who evaluate the applicants, they shared that they would be weighing the essay at 50%, with the overall GPA and pre-req GPA components at 25% each.
Hi! its great to see a thread for Fall 2015. I am also applying to the 2nd degree option and are waiting on my classes to finish to finally apply and submit. I am confused on the essay questions. I have only seen the 3 which are:
1. What motivates you to pursue nursing as a profession?2. You have a bias against pregnant women who smoke. You have a patient who is pregnant andsmoking. How do you reconcile your bias to care for this patient?
3. You are in a clinical experience at the hospital. At the end of the day, your fellow student states thatshe was too afraid to give the patient a bed bath and didn't do it. A few minutes later, your clinicalinstructor comes to the floor. She asks your fellow student if she completed all of the tasks for the day.The student says, Yes and I documented everything, even the bed bathâ€. How would you approach thissituation?
Are there different questions we need to answer once we start the SOAR application? I was told to not start it until I have my classes done and final transcript sent in to USF.
Do not submit your application until all your classes are posted on degreeworks. If you submit it without all the classes the application will come up incomplete and automatically be rejected. Those are the 3 questions that need to be answered. The first question I made one page long, the remaining 2 questions I answered on the second page.
Thank you guys for responding!
I have been working on my essay like a fiend and I have discovered that USF Library's Smarthinking service is very useful. I have turned in two drafts and gotten some very useful tips. I feel more confident about my writing now, even considering how much weight it carries. I have begun the application process, but I will not submit it until my degree is conferred just to be sure.
Congrats to you Summer admits and good luck to those in the same boat as me for Fall! I hope to meet some of you in the near future :)
Any Public Health peeps out there?
Hi! I also applied to this program. However, I just graduated from USF with my bachelor's in Health Sciences this Spring and apparently my degree doesn't post to my transcript until 6 weeks after the commencement ceremony which was May 1st. Unfortunately, that would put my transcript posting around mid-june which would be after the deadline to apply. Kind of unfortunate since I have no control over when my degree posts to my transcript! I emailed via a discussion post on the application asking about my issue but I'm not feeling overly optimistic. I applied to UNF as well and at least they are a little more lenient on this issue. Is anyone else in my position as well?

Hello!
I am applying for the Fall 2015 smester in the Second Degree sequence and I wanted to see who is out there that can give me some advice or commiserate!
I am so nervous about my essay... Their instructions are slightly vague and I am unsure of how to capture their attention and convey my passion for nursing.
Do you think I will get in with 2 years CNA experience as a school "nurse" and a 3.6 pre-req GPA?
Thanks in advance for your responses!
