Hey,
I have 2+ years experience working in the Surgical/Trauma ICU and have a BSN. I have been approved for my nursing license in NSW and have just obtained my working holiday visa. I need advice about the best hospitals to work in for my field of work, where to live, etc. I would LOVE to find a roommate, as I will be traveling alone the end of May 2010. I am a 25 year old female, love anything outdoors, very social and outgoing. I do not know anyone in Sydney and need advice about hospitals, finding a job and roommate. What agencies are the best, would you recommend going with an agency, and how does ICU nursing in OZ differ from the US? Any advice would be helpful!! Thanks so much!! :redbeathe
This is a fantastic thread and I'd love to hear more from folks as well as the original poster and her experience as it's been one year since your first post! I'd love to know from you how things turned out.
As for me, I'm also on my way to completing my BSN, taking my NCLEX but I really want to work in Australia for a bit. Unfortunately, this makes me very "fresh" into the field with no experience.

There is no such thing per say as" telemtry / stepdown" We have High Dependency Units where pt are not intubated but are monitored. Also there is CCU & cardiology wards where pt are monitored. But the majority of the population is not monitored.
No mandated ratios in NSW yet so I cannot say. Most places do primary nursing with little AIN support so don't be surprised if you find yourself washing & making beds etc. Also no "Respiratory" we do have physios who see the pt but nebs & inhalers are the RN responsibility.
Nursing agencies in Sydney seem to follow a regional basis. Nursing Australia supplies Royal north shore & manly. Access supplied Prince of Wales. I worked with a smaller agency & was sent alot of different places until I started making a rep for myself & got a offered more frequent work at Manly hospital in their surgical ward.
