US Nurse-Midwives in France/Europe

Hello,

I'm a US student nurse who is interested in nurse-midwifery; I'm also interested in working in France if I ever finish going to school! My question:

Has anyone ever worked in France or any other part of Europe as a US-trained midwife? What sort of hoops need to be jumped through for this to happen?

Thanks!

Complete fluency in the language, you will need to pass the French nursing boards, as well as get a visa that will permit you to work. You are looking at about two years for the process.

Thanks for your reply...now, a follow-up question:

Assuming that getting a visa isn't a problem, the only issue is passing the boards then? I wouldn't have to go to midwife school in France as well?

That will depend on France's rulings at the time. The US training is recognized in many countries, but I do not know any midwives there. There is not an issue with the UK................

Specializes in RN, BSN, CHDN.

If you came to UK you could not work as a midwife unless you were midwifery trained, either by direct entry over 3 years or as an additional 18 months on top of your 3 year RN qualification. Midwifery here is the whole package deal and you are a professional in your own right and only seek Dr's advice with the abnormal.

Hi Suzanne,

What do you mean? I am sure You cannot practice in UK as midwife unless you are one. An RN cannot work as a midwife in UK then have to do further training

She is asking about working in Europe after she has attended midwifery school in the US. Ours is actually a two year program and is Master's prepared.

Look closely at the second line of her posting..........she is asking about issues for working as a US-trained midwife in Europe.

She would actually have six years of schooling............4 for the BSN, as well as 2 for th CNM, plus most programs want you to have two years of Labor and Delivery experience before you can even begin the training. :)
