Upswing in community college applications...

Does anyone have an opinion on the impact of doing away with the CNA requirement on applications to the Maricopa CC system? I have heard that a lot of people are waiting for it to go away before applying - which may result in a large amount of applications in Spring 2006 (i.e.: more of a wait!). Opinions?

I heard it used to be like that through the MCC system. I personally like it the way it is, because block 1 is busy enough, why have to cram in all that CNA stuff too before going to clinicals?

It probably will lead to some people holding off until Spring to apply. I'm at MCC and some of the people in my classes were talking about waiting to avoid taking the CNA class. I also heard that as of July 2006 patho and nutrition will no longer be coreqs........that also may cause people to delay turning in their packets.....

Why would the co-reqs cause delay? You can complete them during the program, right? At least the Gateway advisor stated I didn't need them to turn in my packet...

I think that people would delay submitting their packets so they won't have to take patho or nutrition....I can "kind of" understand why they will take nutrition away but I don't understand the rationale for doing away with patho. I took the first half of patho last semester and my instructor kept emphasizing how we needed to have a good understanding of patho in order to do well in Block 1.....Also, patho and nutrition are needed for ASU's BSN program, so anyone who is interested in doing their RN-BSN there will have to take them anyway........

I am learning so much in Patho right now, it's a good class. I can't imagine why they would take something away from the nursing education. I also think it is great to get the CNA before hand, and possibly go to work in the field before starting the program. I know for me, it opened my eyes a lot. I know a little more about what to expect.

I agree with Rebecca, Patho is so important, I cant imagine why they would do away with it. I learned so much information that I think is crucial to being a nurse. The CNA class too, was very informative and gives you a taste of what the medical field is like, if you have never been exposed to it. I loved it and saw and learned so much.

It seems hard to believe they would toss those classes. Wouldn't they just be moved out of the program and to the prerequisite course list?

I'm not sure why they would remove patho and nutrition. I know that they are planning to teach the skills learned in the CNA course during Block 1. My friend met with the nursing advisor at MCC last week. She asked if she should take Patho this semester (she ony has 1 prereq left to take) and was told to hold off that it may no longer be a coreq. Apparently there is going to be a lot of changes for people applying in Spring 06.

Last semester I was able to access some powerpoint presentations for NUR161 and a lot of the material covered there was also covered in my Patho class. My guess is that they'll somehow incorporate the two classes.....

You've got it right. I talked to the Director of Nursing for Maricopa CC's yesterday and she said that they are going to incoorporate Patho into Block 1, so that it won't be a co-req, but it will be part of the program. Also I'm not sure if they're doing the same for FON. Unfortunately since I"ve already got my app in I'll still need the co-req, unless I don't get in this spring. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that I"ll get in to NS this spring and take patho anyway this fall.

I've got some friends who are waiting to turn in their app's because of the CNA requirement being dropped. I'm a little bummed out that now they're changing all of the requirements, but too late for me to be affected. It cost me over $1000 to get my CNA license, and now it's not even going to be a pre-req.

Have you guys had a problem with Maricopa CC's and misinformation??? I was told that CG would have a spring class and my friend and I were counting on it, come to find out they only have a fall class. Since my friend and I were planning on (hopefully) getting accepted this spring, that completely throws all our plans out the window and we now have to scramble around and change our app's and figure out what other options will work. :banghead:

Hi Calzonan,

I'm in the same boat you are....I took my CNA class at Pima which was around 850...I've taken Nutrition, the first half of Patho, and I'll be taking the second

half this fall....I enjoyed Nutrition and Patho so I don't regret taking them, but I do regret the 850.00 for the CNA class......

Did you submit your application yet? I applied in March and I'm hoping to get in in January (my lottery # is 57)...I put MCC down as my first choice and CGCC as my second. Where did you hear CGCC will only be admitting people once a year?

I'm now debating whether or not to to add SCC as my 3rd choice. The only problem with SCC is that I may have daycare issues when it comes to attending clinicals........aaaargghhh!

Mary

Hi Mary. I applied this summer, so I may or may not get in in the spring. I was at CG yesterday and asked advisement how many openings they were going to have in the spring and the lady told me they aren't accepting applications for the spring. I can't believe you already have a lottery number. My friend applied in March and hasn't gotten a number yet, just a date/time stamp. My date and time stamp is so high, I'm really bummed out about it. It's 6/6 8:02 A.M. so I thought it would be low, figuring 30 seconds or so per number. Wrong!! It's every second!!! So I'm something like number 122 or something, in the summer app's, so way behind spring and way behind summer. I'm thinking of applying at Glendales pt program, classes are only Fri and SAt, as I have daycare issues too.

I'm taking FON and Patho this fall so I'll be all done with my co-req's, just wish they weren't a requirement for me as well.
