Hi!
I'm looking to relocate to Albany area of NY within the next year or so, and I'm wondering what the starting salaries of hospitals in upstate NY are like. I am a BSN new grad. I know the cost of living is significantly lower than where I'm from (Northern NJ) but I have some student loans that I'm trying to nip in the butt, and I'm hoping I can find a hospital that's salary and benefits meet my needs :) I'm also willing to consider Hudson Valley/Poughkeepsie area as well. Thanks!

lnori,
Is that base salary or with differential? Do you know about any specific hospitals and what kinds of benefits they may offer?
Thanks so much!!

I can't speak for the other hospitals, but I can tell you that Bassett has a starting pay of $24/hr with a 36 hour work week. You first 12 weeks will be (mostly) 40 hours a week, after that it's 36 hours, but plenty of opportunity to pick up extra shifts once you're established. If you work nights, it's another $1.55/hr (although another nurse that was hired the same time as I was, and only had an associates, said she was offered $2.55/hr for nights, but I don't know if that's true or not) and another $1/hr for weekends (you will work every other weekend). They are starting a sign on bonus for new grad nurses ($8,000), not sure if it started yet, though. Once it does start, you are required to stay there for 3 years or pay it back.
The pay is low, but the upside is you could very easily start working within a week or 2 of your interview so you can start gaining that experience right away, versus spending 6 months trying to be hired in the tristate area.
As for benefits, I don't know exactly what you're looking for. Health insurance is pretty cheap even for a family and there is no deductible if you stay within the bassett network. They do not cover domestic partners anymore, though. For dental, you can choose between 2 plans -- the first is pretty cheap, but doesn't cover orthodontics and only 40% of major dental work. The other is a little more expensive, but covers 60% of your major dental expenses and, I think, up to $2,000 for orthodontics. I have all the information in the orientation packet if you had specific questions.

Orange Regional Medical Center, in Middletown,NY , has excellent pay and benefits. It's about 2/12 hrs from Albany. Don't know the particulars, but worth looking into, depending on how you fare at Albany Med. I worked there for 24 yrs , the hospital itself is new, about 5 yrs old. Good luck in your search! I would love to learn more about your experience at ORMC! And Destin293, thank you so much for all of this information! Bassett seems to be a great place for a nurse to get her start. I would have to weigh the logisitics, because it is a little bit further west than I had in mind, but it sounds like it would be worth it!
Hi Ite, there's really a lot I don't know, sorry. I do know the starting pay is good, but not how much. When I left, I was making $43/hr. It would have been higher, but I spent the first 9 yrs as an LPN. It's all 12 hr shifts, actually 37.5, but after 3 pm, you get evening differential. If you are " full time", which is a .7 or more( that's 5 days every 2 weeks, you don't pay anything for your health insurance, which is pretty good. You do have to use their facilities, in or outpt, for routine procedures, otherwise they pay 80%. Working conditions are good, depending where you work. I worked as a med surf float, lots of good experience, then found my home in telemetry. Management is management, they expect a lot. The environment is nice because the hospital is only 5 yrs old. All private rooms, we use Epic for everything. A new med school just started up nearby, I didn't get a chance to work with the students. You can find anything you want in town, and were surrounded by natural beauty. So while it was very hard at times, I stayed there my whole career. Having a BSN is a bonus, as they are looking to hire BSN. So look up their webpage, Orange Regional Medical Center, in Middletown, NY 10940. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it's worth a look into.
Thank you so much!! This is so helpful. I would love to work for ORMC if I could. I live close enough to the NY border that I could live at home for a few months until I was settled. Do you know anything about overtime at the hospital?
Destin293,
I also would like to know about opportunities for overtime at Bassett.
plenty of OT to be had, I was offered OT 1 day out of orientation.

Hey did you already move? I actually just moved up here and I am a new graduate searching for a nursing position near the Albany, Latham, Schenectady area ( which are fairly close to each other). Moving from NYC area and Northern New Jersey, I was really surprised on how much nurses get payed up here. I know that New York City living expenses are a lot more higher than up here and I suppose this is why the pay differences have such a huge gab. Some of my friends whom we graduated together and are now working in NYC are getting paid around $35-$40 an hour and others even higher adding up to an average salary of 75-95k yearly depending on the facility that you're working in. However, living up Northern New Jersey to centeral New Jersey, the living expenses are fairy lower and nurses earn on the 30s hourly with an annual salary of about 65-80k on average depending on the facility that you're working in. Around here though, the pay is on the 20s and a salary of about 51-55k. which is a big shocker for me because I actually thought it would be at least around 60-70k here in upstate NY. My first job offer offered me 51k salary and I was shocked but I love the facility judging from the interview and orientation.
