Wow... I thought for sure after reducing benefits "due to the economy" that they wouldn't be back.. but kudos and brownie points to the UPMC management who announced the following today:
"Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to caring for our patients and helping our communities. Now, we are pleased to announce that, effective Jan. 1, 2011, UPMC is reinstating the 1 percent employer matching contribution to the UPMC Savings Plan. This action signifies UPMC's commitment to helping our staff plan and save for a secure future."
"Also effective Jan. 1, 2011, UPMC is increasing the pool of funds available for merit increases. UPMC believes that providing increases to our staff members who meet or exceed performance expectations is crucial for maintaining a qualified, competent workforce."
"Thank you for your continued commitment and hard work."

So the employer match contribution is back to 3%? I would like more details on the merit increases. If UPMC is reinstating benefits, I wonder if they will hire more GNs next year.

The job market for nurses in Pittsburgh will be horrible for years to come. Nursing schools continue to pour out new grads even as health systems cut back. WPAHS has closed Suburban General in Bellevue, and now appears to be "closing" West Penn in piecemeal fashion. There will be enough RNs out of work to staff an entire 700+ bed hospital.
