UPMC to hire 1,300 over 12 months

Hi ghillbert, I am an iranian/australian nurse educated in A.U. I am thinking of moving to USA with my family and do nursing there. as you been there for couple of years I greatly appreciate to give me advise and answer my Qs. first of all I am an aged care nurse graduated july 2010 , how is aged care nursing in USA? any job opportunity? which states are easier or quicker to get license and more job avilable there? I initially planed for Cali but with SS# looks impossible to start off with . can you please advise me

I heard that with the new UPMC hospital opening up, there is going to be a "nursing shortage" in Pittsburgh. But who knows how true that'll be until the place officially opens.

Most of the positions I have seen have been for 'Professional Staff Nurses' Reguiring 6 months of experience or more. Kind of discouraging to new grads! I am on month number 5 as an RN at my current job, but even the 'staff nurse' positions I have applied for have not been biting. I live closest to UPMC Mckeesport but I would not work there... I have heard horror stories of severe staff shortages and the area is terrrrible!

I have more than 6 months experience and I can't even get an interview. I have no idea what these nurse recruiters are looking for. Where is UPMC going to find enough experienced nurses to work at UPMC East? From what I was told by GNs, UPMC East isn't hiring new nurses until the fall.

I constantly see positions for UPMC McKeesport, but I haven't recieved a call for an interview or anything. It's not like it's the place to be- that's for sure!

You need to be active and aggressive. As far as UPMC Mckeesport goes, why bad mouth it? It provides care to many patients in need. It also has a Union for nurses. It also makes UPMC a lot of money every year, thus it is constantly being upgraded.

UPMC East will be a great community hospital.

I am not saying anything bad about the hospital at all... I know that people who go there are given the care they want and need. Just speaking from the nursing side of things that I have heard terrible things from people who have worked there and I personally wouldn't want to work for them. As far as the area goes... I just wouldn't want to be caught working night shifts and walking to my car. Just a bad spot in my opinion. I agree UPMC East looks nice so far!
